Oceanic Airlines is a fictional airline used on television and in movies, not to be confused with real airlines TransOceanic Airlines and Ocean Airlines.
The portrayal of Oceanic Airlines as being disaster prone has become something of an inside joke among television and movie fans: for example, popular TV review site Television Without Pity sold a set of limited edition shirts and messenger bags branded with an Oceanic Airlines logo and the slogan "Getting halfway there is all the fun!" The Oceanic Airlines slogan from "Lost" seems especially apt for the danger prone airline: "Taking You Places You' Never Imagined!", as does its logo: a highly stylized Australian dot painting resembling a bulls-eye.

Sawyer worked at a car dealership in order to ultimately con his co-worker Jessica and her husband David.
Sawyer confesses to Kate that he ran the same con that was run on his parents. He became the man he was hunting.
One of Sawyer's cons was trying to get people to invest money in an oil mining operation. The fictitious company name is called Kingfield Oil (seen on a brochure).
Sawyer took the name Sawyer as an alias when he entered a similar life of crime to pay some debts. He hates himself for this, which explains why he seems to go to such great lengths to make everyone else hate him.
Sawyer was born in 1968. Based on a sticker on the envelope that reads "America's Bicentennial, 1976, Knoxville, Tennessee", Kate deduces that Sawyer was the wrong age when he said he wrote it in 1976 at age 10. Sawyer would have been 8 years old in 1976.

Info on Eucalyptus:
The name eucalyptus means "well-covered". It describes the bud cap (technically called an operculum). This cap forms from modified petals and falls off as the flower opens.
Eucalypts have a habit of dropping entire branches off as they grow. Eucalyptus forests are littered with dead branches. The Australian Ghost Gum Eucalyptus papuana is also termed the "widow maker", due to the high number of tree felling workers who were killed by falling branches.
On warm days vaporized eucalyptus oil rises above the Australian bush to create the characteristic distant blue haze of the Australian landscape.
Eucalyptus oil is highly flammable (trees have been known to explode) and bush fires can travel easily through the oil rich air of the tree crowns. However, eucalypts regenerate quickly after fire.
Eucalyptus oil is readily steam distilled from the leaves and can be used for cleaning, deodorizing and in very small quantities in food supplements especially sweets, cough drops and decongestants.
The nectar of some eucalypts produces high quality honey.
We learn that Shannon has asthma. She has been embarrassed about it since she was young. Interesting note: Shannon does not have any further asthma problems and never mentions it again.

He was fed up with a customer who continued to send his fried potatoes back because they were too thick and soggy. Crum decided to slice the potatoes so thin that they couldn't be eaten with a fork. They became a regular item on the lodge's menu under the name "Saratoga Chips". They soon became popular throughout New England. A mass marketed potato chips become popular in the 1920's when the mechanical potato peeler was invented. This product was developed by Herman Lay, a traveling salesman in the southern United States. Before the airtight sealed bag was developed, potato chips were stored in barrels or tins. The chips at the bottom were often stale and damp. Then Laura Scudder invented the bag by ironing together two pieces of wax paper, thereby creating an airtight seal and keeping the chips fresh until opened.

The 1912 and 1915 clubs featured an outfield considered to be among the finest in the game. The Red Sox signed Babe Ruth and in 1919 the team's new owner, Harry Frazee, sold Ruth to the New York Yankees. Legend has it that he did so in order to finance a Broadway play "No, No Nanette" starring 'a friend', but the play did not open on Broadway until 1925. Frazee actually sold Ruth because he needed the money to purchase Fenway Park (which he did in 1920), the Red Sox franchise was in serious debt and Ruth was a disciplinary problem. The contract was a straight sale. The Red Sox got no players in return. This transaction would later become the known as the Curse of the Bambino. Red Sox fans believed that the club was doomed to years of futility as a result of the sale. In 2004 the Red Sox faced the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. The Red Sox would go on to win the first two games in Boston then would win the next two in St. Louis.

Michael is talking with Walt about all the buildings he wants him to see in New York City when they get off the island. Michael tells Walt about the Flat Iron Building. This building inspired Michael to start drawing. The Flatiron Building is on 5th avenue between 23rd and 22nd streets. It was built in 1902. It is said that the building created unusual wind patterns that would cause women's skirts to fly around as they walked on 23rd street. This attracted many young men to gather to view the skirt flying.
Betty (Sawyer's nickname for Sun) is probably a reference to the old television game show called The Liar's Club. Contestants on this game show were shown an unusual looking object, then each of a panel of four celebrities gave an outlandish but plausible explanation as to its use. The contestant then had to wager all or part of their $100 on who they believe.
Hurley has the Damien Rice song "Delicate" playing on his CD player. [Why do batteries always run out in the middle of a song]

Martha Toomey refers to a pickup truck as a "ute". In Australia trucks are called a "ute", which is short for utility.
We learn that Sam Toomey and Lenny were in the navy stationed at a listening post monitoring long wave transmissions. One night he heard the numbers.
With everything that happened to Martha and Sam, Martha does not believe the numbers are cursed.
All the numbers are retired Yankee jersey numbers. Note: While Yankee jersey 42 was not retired specifically by the Yankees, 42 was retired across the league on April 15, 1997 to honor Jackie Robinson. 4 is Lou Gehrig's number. 8 is Yogi Berra's number and Bill Dickey's number. 15 is Thurman Munson's number. 19. Deus Ex Machina
The episode was directed by Robert Mandel. Other TV series he has directed episodes for: Prison Break, The District, Nash Bridges, The Practice, The X-Files and Hard Time On Planet Earth.
The episode title is Latin for "god from the machine". It originated with Greek and Roman theater, when a mechane would lower a god or gods onstage to resolve a hopeless situation. Thus, "god comes from the machine". The phrase has been extended to refer to any resolution to a story which does not pay due regard to the story's internal logic and is so unlikely it challenges suspension of disbelief, and presumably allows the author to end it in the way he or she wanted. In short, a deus ex machina is a quick fix in a story.

At the start of the episode, Sayid is being escorted through London's Heathrow Airport. Heathrow is the world's third-busiest airport by total passenger traffic. It is located in the London Borough of Hillingdon, which is in the west of London. Heathrow began its long life in the 1930's as the Great Western Aerodrome, privately owned by Fairey Aviation, primarily for testing, the land being acquired from the Vicar of Harmondsworth. The airport was named after the hamlet Heath Row, which was demolished to make way for the airport and was located approximately where Terminal 3 is sited now. In 1944, Heathrow came under control of the Ministry of Air. Harold Balfour wrote in his memoirs that he deliberately deceived the government requisition committee in order that Heathrow could be used as a bomber base. In fact, Balfour wrote, he always intended the site to be used for civil aviation and used a wartime emergency requisition order to avoid a lengthy and costly public inquiry. Certainly the Royal Air Force never made use of the airport and control was transferred to the Ministry of Civil Aviation on January 1, 1946. The airport then opened fully for civilian use on May 31, 1946.
