N.O.A.A. satellites orbit every 108 minutes or about 14 times a day.
The satellite scans a 5,000 kilometer wide area as it passes.
The satellite is within transmitter range for about 10 minutes.
If the transmitter is sending then the satellite will receive multiple messages from the swan's transmitter.
Because of the earth's rotation a transmitter at the equator would be scanned once a day while a transmitter at one of the poles could be scanned 14 times a day.
When the satellite passes one of three main ground stations, it downloads the information to computers. The computers then calculate the location of the swan computer and sends the owner of the transmitter an e-mail message. The Shadow-A-Swan website then updates the archive for each Swan computer message, maps the longitude and latitude and calculates the distance traveled since the last reported location.

Dharma Initiative is the brainchild of two B.F. Skinner devotees from the University of Michigan named Gerald and Karen DeGroot.
Alvar Hanso is the financial backer for the Dharma Initiative. In the Swan Orientation film he is seen standing in the Narvek, Norway City Hall. In UFO mythology, a flying saucer crashed on the island of Spitsbergen, off Norway's coast, on September 9, 1953. The debris was brought back to Narvek. Narvek is Alvar Hanso's hometown.
The Dharma Initiative was created to observe: Meteorology (the scientific study of the atmosphere that focuses on weather processes and forecasting), Psychology (the study of behavior, mind and thought and the neurological bases of behavior), Parapsychology (the study of the evidence involving phenomena where a person seems to affect or to gain information about something through a means not currently explainable within the framework of mainstream, conventional science), Zoology (the study of animals), Electromagnetics (Electromagnetism is the physics of the electromagnetic field) and Utopian Social Inclusive.
If you look carefully you’ll notice Dr. Candle possesses both a prosthetic left arm and a glass eye.
The Swan Orientation film ends with “Copyright 1980 by The Hanso Foundation. All Rights Reserved”.
Two people stay inside station 3, The Swan, for 540 days.

  • In electromagnetism, the Faraday cage is an application of Gauss' law, one of Maxwell’s equations. Gauss' law describes the distribution of electrical charge on a conducting form, such as a sphere, a plane, a torus, etc. Intuitively, since like charges repel each other, charge will "migrate" to the surface of the conducting form, as described below. The application is named for physicist Michael Faraday, who built the first Faraday cage in 1836, to demonstrate his finding. Faraday was the experimentalist who described the physical concepts formulated in Maxwell's equations.
  • There is a Mayan Calendar seen in the Swan Orientation film. There are actually three Mayan calendar systems, the 365 day Solar year, the 260-day Ritual year, and the 5,128 years of the World Time calendar. Millionaire Chicago publisher William Dickson Boyce became involved in Scouting in 1909. He was visiting London in August of that year. One afternoon, the city was enshrouded in pea-soup fog. Boyce lost his bearings in the murk and was approached by a boy carrying a lantern who offered to guide him to the address he was seeking. When Boyce produced a shilling, the boy replied, "No, sir, I am a scout. Scouts do not accept tips for Good Turns”. The unknown scout took Boyce to British Scout headquarters. From that moment forward, Boyce's interest in Scouting grew. Boyce came home determined to start Boy Scouting in America. On February 8, 1910, Boyce filed incorporation papers for the Boy Scouts of America in the District of Columbia. The purpose, he said, "Shall be to promote, through organization, and cooperation with other agencies, the ability of boys to do things for themselves and others, to train them in Scout craft, and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred virtues, using the methods which are in common use by Boy Scouts”.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

    To the Church in Sardis

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
    To the Church in Philadelphia
"To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:
These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth. I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown. Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
    To the Church in Laodicea
"To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

  • Bluebeard (Sawyer's nickname for the bearded "Other" Mr. Friendly) is a folk tale by Charles Perrault and published in 1697. The history of the tale is debated, but the popular opinion is that the tale developed from the legend of Gilles de Rais. Gilles de Rais was a Marshal of France and served under Joan of Arc before her execution. He was a French national hero for helping drive the English out of France. After the crowning of the Dauphin and the death of Joan of Arc, Gilles de Rais settled into his estates in Brittany and turned deviant. He practiced alchemy and black magic while he was a great patron of the arts. He enjoyed killing, usually by decapitation and young boys after he had sodomized them. His fame and influence kept people from noticing that children were disappearing from his lands. Some speculators think the story of Bluebeard arose among the peasantry to warn their children to stay away from the dangerous baron whom they had no other protection against due to his political and financial stature. Finally, the Duke of Brittany investigated the murders and dug up the remains of 50 boys in Gilles de Rais' castle. He confessed to 140 killings at his trial, but he might have killed up to 300 people. He was burned alive and hanged simultaneously for his crimes on October 26, 1440.

  • Info on The Kinks (one of Charlie's favorite bands):
The heart and soul of The Kinks is brothers Ray and Dave Davies who have been performing together since 1963, at which time Ray joined his younger brother's band, the Ravens (soon renamed The Kinks). Only the Rolling Stones, can claim a lengthier run as an active rock and roll band. Ray Davies is almost indisputably rock's most literate, witty and insightful songwriter. Dave Davies, on the other hand, is renowned for his guitar playing. His pioneering hard-rock style is today considered a forerunner of heavy metal. As the popularity of beat group music faded in the late 60's, Ray Davies' creativity and his songwriting matured. Always a band of anti-trendsetters, The Kinks ignored the countercultural assault of the late Sixties in order to reflect brilliantly on the life and times in the British Empire using British music hall, aggressive rock and Indian inspired music. Though The Kinks struggled commercially and performed unevenly, even as they were writing and recording some of their most timeless music. Ray Davies spent the early 70's composing a series of concept albums. As the decade wore on, however, the group turned its attention to America in their songwriting and touring. A series of popular albums with a more updated, hard hitting sound translated into sold out tours and The Kinks' first gold album. While The Kinks carried on, a new generation of rockers found inspiration in the band's early sound and songs. They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990.

  • The original English Flag (seen in Liam and Charlie's apartment) combined the red on white English the Cross Of St. George (England's patron saint in the 13th century) with the white on blue Scottish Cross of St Andrew. It was introduced in 1606 after England and Scotland were united under James VI of Scotland and George I of England. The modern flag appeared when Ireland was joined to the United Kingdom in 1800. The new flag included the diagonal red on white Cross of St Patrick. The term Union Jack possibly dates from Queen Anne's time (reigned 1702-14), but its origin is uncertain. It may come from the “jack-et” of the English or Scottish soldiers or from James I who originated the first union in 1603 used in either its Latin or French form (“Jacobus” or “Jacques “or “jack”) once meant small or the name may be derived from a royal proclamation issued by Charles II that the Union Flag should be flown only by ships of the Royal Navy as a jack, a small flag at the bowsprit.

  • Christians adopted the dove as the symbol of the "Holy Spirit". Artists have often painted doves flocking about Jesus, drawing from the many Biblical associations of the dove with the presence of God. In the New Testament, Mary is told of her conception of Jesus by the Holy Spirit descending as a dove. The four main gospels of the New Testament describe the baptism of Jesus when "the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove" came down from the heavens.

  • Blackjack or 21 is one of the most popular casino card games in the world. Much of blackjack's popularity is due to the mix of chance with elements of skill and decision making and the practice of card counting, a skill with which players can turn the odds of the game in their favor by making betting decisions based on the values of the cards known to remain in the deck. Blackjack was probably spawned from French games such as "Chemin De Fer" and "French Ferme" and originated in French casinos around 1700 where it was called "Vingt-Et-Un" ("Twenty-One"). When blackjack was first introduced in the United States in the 1800's it wasn't very popular, so gambling houses tried offering various bonus payouts to get the players to the tables. However, in 1931 after Nevada re-legalized casino gamblinr 21 years, it became one of the primary games of chance offered to gamblers.

  • Info on Heroin:
Heroin was first synthesized in 1874 by C.R. Alder Wright, a British chemist working at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, London. He had been experimenting with combining morphine with various acids. He boiled anhydrous morphine alkaloid with acetic anhydride over a stove for several hours and produced a more potent, acetylated form of morphine (diacetylmorphine).
Heinrich Dreser, of the Bayer Company in Elberfeld, Germany, also found that diacetylmorphine was more potent than morphine. Bayer registered Heroin (meaning 'heroic treatment' from the German word heroisch) as a trademark.
From 1898 through to 1910 it was marketed as a non-addictive morphine substitute and cough medicine for children.
In 1914 the Harrison Narcotics Tax Act made it illegal to manufacture or possess heroin in the United States.
A “60 Minutes” report claims that 87 percent of the world's heroin supply comes from Afghanistan.
Contrary to popular belief, a heroin overdose is not fast acting.
Stories about people who OD with the needle still in their arm are not attributable to heroin overdoses, but rather they are very often the result of a fatal reaction with the adulterant, Quinine.
Abrupt termination of heroin use can cause muscle spasms in the legs of the user (called restless leg syndrome), hence the term "kicking the habit".
In the United Kingdom, heroin is available on prescription though it is restricted.

  • Conning 101:
    It's all in the details.
People will look at the cost on the price tags to determine if they want the merchandise and not so much on the quality of merchandise.
By putting a band-aid on the con artist's nose, the only thing people are going to remember is a guy that looks like he's been in a bar fight.
If one person buys something then other people are more likely to buy.
If people are on the verge of deciding whether to buy or not, start slowing turning and walking away from them.

  • The script Hurley finds is called "Bad Twin" by Gary Thoup.
The synopsis: Paul Artisan, a private investigator, is a new version of an old breed- a righter of wrongs, someone driven to get to the bottom of things. Too bad his usual cases are of the boring malpractice and fraud variety. Until now. His new gig turns on the disappearance of one of a pair of twins, adult scions of a rich but tragedy-prone family. The missing twin- a charismatic poster-boy for irresponsibility-has spent his life daring people to hate him, punishing himself endlessly for his screw ups and misdeeds. The other twin Artisan's client-is dutiful and resentful in equal measure, bewildered that his "other half" could have turned out so badly, and wracked by guilt at his inability to reform him. He has a more practical reason, as well, for wanting his brother found: their crazy father, in failing health and with guilty secrets of his own, will not divide the family fortune until both siblings are accounted for. But it isn't just a fortune that's at stake here. Truth itself is up for grabs, as the detective's discoveries seem to challenge everything we think we know about identity, and human nature, and family. As Artisan journeys across the globe to track down the bad twin, he seems to have moved into a mirror-world where friends and enemies have a way of looking very much alike. The P. I. may have his long-awaited chance to put his courage and ideals to the test, but if he doesn't get to the bottom of this case soon, it could very well cost him his life. Troup's long-awaited Bad Twin is a suspenseful novel that touches on many powerful themes, including the consequence of vengeance, the power of redemption, and where to turn when all seems lost.
  • Tokyo Rose (Sawyer's nickname for Sun) was a name given by United States forces in the South Pacific during World War II to any of several English speaking female broadcasters of Japanese propaganda. The name is usually associated with Iva Toguri D'Aquino, a United States citizen who was in Japan at the start of the war. In 1949, D'Aquino was tried and convicted of treason by the United States government, based on perjured testimony. She was later pardoned by U.S. President Gerald Ford. Conspiracy theorists have suggested a number of other possible identities for "Tokyo Rose", including Amelia Earhart, who some believe was forced to make propaganda broadcasts after her disappearance in 1937 as some believe Earhart's plane went down in the South Pacific Mandate area, which was under Japanese Navy administration before WWII.

  • The book "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce (the book Locke picked up) Synopsis:
During the United States Civil War, a condemned man has many thoughts as he stands on a bridge, awaiting hanging. When he is hanged the rope breaks and the main character falls into the water, from which he begins a journey back to his home. During his journey, he starts to feel some strange physiological events that ultimately end with a searing pain in his neck. It turns out that the man never escaped; he imagined the entire thing during the time between being pushed off the bridge and the noose finally breaking his neck. Also, in 1913 at the age of seventy-one, Bierce disappeared into revolution torn Mexico to fight alongside the bandit Pancho Villa. Although a popular theory is that Bierce argued with Villa over military strategy and was subsequently shot, he probably perished in the battle of Ojinaga on January 11, 1914.

An announcer says that the listeners had just heard Duke Ellington, mentions the station's call letters (WXO) and plays "Moonlight Serenade" by The Glen Miler Orchestra.
  • Glen Miller dominated popular music in the 30's and 40's. He developed a distinctive sound in which a high pitched clarinet carried the melody, doubled by a saxophone section playing an octave lower and he used that sound to produce a series of hits that remain definitive examples of swing music. Glen Miller's approach is under appreciated by jazz fans, which prefer bands that allow for greater improvisation than a highly disciplined, rigorously rehearsed unit like Glen Miller And His Orchestra. Interesting, Glen Miller disappeared under mysterious circumstances in a plane crash during World War II. On December 14, 1944, Miller got on a Norseman UC-64 plane to Paris. It crashed somewhere over the English Channel. Over the years there have been much speculation as to what happened. One of the most widely held beliefs is that the aircraft Miller was flying in was victim to friendly fire. Another account had him in Paris dying in the arms of a prostitute. Still another had him captured by the Germans and dying during the war in a prison camp.

Hot air balloons has been used in wartime since the 1800’s as observation towers. During World War II, Britain introduced balloon barrages. Barrages consisted of captive balloons with steel cable suspended between them. The enemy had to fly above the balloons or risk getting torn apart by the cables. • Locke's not too macho to do the Swan Hatch's dishes. [Note: What's this- the dishes don't have the Dharma Initiative logo on them?]
  • This is the first episode not to feature a character's flashback off the island.
  • Claire turns to Libby, a psychologist, for help in recovering her memory of the two weeks she was gone. Libby thinks that Claire does not have amnesia, but rather she is blocking painful memories.
  • Claire is concerned about Aaron's fever, lack of appetite, lack of sleeping, cough and a rash. It's probably Rosiola- a typical virus that's common in children his age and the rash is a sign of it.
  • While Ethan is escorting Claire to the baby's room, the words “Escape Hatch” can be seen when they are walking down the hall.
  • The room made for Claire's baby contains: an oak dresser with an airplane lamp and cartoon train on it, a picture of a cartoon fire engine above the oak dresser on the wall, a mobile with 4 toy Oceanic planes and a silver star in the middle, an oak crib with a blue and white car runner and sheets, a Winnie The Pooh and Tigger pillow, smiley face noise makers attached to the crib, an oak rocking chair with a white cushion, a floor lamp next to a rocking chair and crib, an oak bench with blue stars on it with a stuffed teddy bear, a stuffed bunny and a stuffed lion on the bench, an oak shelf on the wall with a stuffed panda bear and a stuffed lion on it, a bag and an infant Dharma Initiative terry cloth robe [how cute!] hanging from the hooks of the oak shelf, a twin size oak bed with 5 pillows, a comforter and a stuffed teddy bear on it, a picture of a cartoon train above the oak bed on the wall, a picture of a cartoon tiger, a cartoon hippo, a cartoon lion, a cartoon zebra and a cartoon monkey on the wall above the crib, a 2 drawer blue nightstand dresser with a small white airplane lamp and a stuffed bunny on it, an oak baby changing station with supplies on the 2 shelves, a picture of a cartoon boat above the baby changing station, a rug before the crib, a rug before the baby changing station, a floor lamp next to the baby changing station and various books and toys on an oak bookcase.
  • The numbers and words that appear on the vial are "CR 4-81516-23 42".
  • The vial has the words “For Injection USP”, “Multiple Dose Vial”, “Directions for use”, ”See Package box” and “RX-1 GND”.
  • When Ethan was injecting Claire, you can hear the same music Sayid and Hurley picked up on the radio ("Moonlight Serenade" by The Glen Miller Orchestra).
  • USP on the vial can refer to the United States Pharmacopoeia.
  • We learn that the baby's room has the same crib and mobile from Season 1 Episode 10 Raised By Another episode.
  • We learn that the song on the mobile is "Catch A Falling Star" which Claire remembers her father singing to her as a baby.
  • We learn that Claire can knit.
  • The things we learn about Ethan Rom:
Ethan Rom is seen as Claire's doctor.
Ethan Rom had Claire convinced that she made the decision to turn over her baby to Ethan.
Ethan Rom drugged Claire into a functual comatose state so her could inject her fetus with the "sickness" vaccine.
Ethan Rom was supposed to get a list of names of all the Middle Section survivors, just like Nathan got a list of all the names of the Tail Section survivors and he didn't because he took a liking to Claire.
  • The things we learn about the "Others":
The "Others" have a forceful leader referred to as "HIM".
The "Others" weren't going to keep Claire but they were going to keep the baby.

  • We learn that Danielle's scratches on her arm occurred from struggling with Claire so Danielle could get Claire to some place safe.
  • Kate's search of the lockers in the Caduceus (medical) Hatch reveals torn clothes, Dharma Initiative theatrical hair glue, a fake beard and the hat previously seen on the bearded "Other" Mr. Friendly.
  • The Dharma Initiative logo for the Caduceus (medical) Hatch is the traditional medical caduceus symbol in red. Caduceus is a staff with two snakes wrapped around it. It was an ancient astrological symbol of commerce and is associated with the Greek god Hermes, the messenger for the gods, astrologer, healer and creator of magical incantations, conductor of the dead and protector of merchants and thieves. It was originally a herald's staff, sometimes with wings, with two white ribbons attached. The ribbons eventually evolved into snakes in the figure-eight shape. The number eight is important to the practitioners of judicial astrology.
  • Locke gives Henry Gale the novel “The Brothers Of Karamazov” by Alexander Dostoevsky to read.
Synopsis: When brutal landowner Fyodor Karamazov is murdered, the lives of his sons are changed irrevocably: Mitya, the sensualist, whose bitter rivalry with his father immediately places him under suspicion for parricide; Ivan, the intellectual, whose mental tortures drive him to breakdown; the spiritual Alyosha, who tries to heal the family's rifts; and the shadowy figure of their bastard half-brother Smerdyakov. As the ensuing investigation and trial reveal the true identity of the murderer, Dostoyevsky's dark masterpiece evokes a world where the lines between innocence and corruption, good and evil, blur and everyone's faith in humanity is tested.
  • In a conversation about writers Earnest Hemingway and Alexander Dostoyevsky, Gale mentions that Hemingway ran with the bulls and he can’t understand Dostoyevsky. Locke rebuts that bullfighting isn’t everything and the Dostoyevsky had his virtues too.
  • Henry Gale, still playing the balloon crash survivor, begins to play on the power struggle between Locke & Jack and, much to his enjoyment, he gets the best of Locke.
  • Henry Gale demonstrates that he has very good hearing, commenting on conversations heard through the gun closet's door.
  • In some cultures hair growth is a ritual of purification and atonement. It is a visual symbol for the time between when the action occurred and when redemption is given.

Synopsis: Confined in the Institute for Aberrant Behavior, Lancelot Andrewes Lamar, scion of a distinguished Southern family and disenchanted liberal lawyer, tells a psychiatrist-priest of his efforts to prove his wife's infidelity and his decision to begin life anew.
  • Ethan calls his group “Good People” which is also how Claire's psychic describes the adoptive couple.
  • The Spanish Civil War (mentioned by Ben) was a conflict in which the incumbent Second Spanish Republic and political left wing groups fought against a right wing nationalist insurrection led by General Francisco Franco, who eventually succeeded in ousting the Republican government and establishing a dictatorship. It was the result of the complex political, economic and even cultural divisions amid what Spanish writer Antonio Machado characterized as the two Spains.
  • Henry gives that suspiciously contented look again from the previous episode (this time to Locke) when Henry gets the better of Locke like he is saying to Locke "you tried, but I won".
  • The Numbers spotted:
There are 4 Oceanic Air planes on the baby mobile.
    The numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 appear on the Ethan’s medicine bottle.

  • Locke and Jack are listening to the song "Pushin' Too Hard" by The Seeds when Ana-Lucia is interrogating Henry.
  • Info on The Seeds:
Vocalist Sky Saxon and guitarist Jan Savage formed the Seeds with keyboardist Daryl Hooper and drummer Rick Andridge in Los Angles in 1965. By the end of 1966, they had secured a record contract, releasing "Pushin' Too Hard" as their first single. The song climbed into the Top 40 early in 1967, and the group immediately released two sound alike singles, "Mr. Farmer" and "Can't Seem To Make You Mine", in an attempt to replicate their success. While their singles were garage punk, the Seeds attempted to branch out by doing improvisational blues rock with a psychedelic concept album similar to The Beatles' “Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. It didn't become a hit. Two other albums were released at the end of the 60's, but both were ignored. The Seeds broke up shortly afterward. During the early 70’s, Saxon led a number of bands before retreating from society and moving to Hawaii. Savage became a member of the Los Angeles Police Department.
  • We learn that Kate has taken a pregnancy test.
  • The pregnancy test that Sun took is from Widmore Labs. It may have a connection with Widmore Construction, the name of Michael's employer.
  • Sawyer is reading "Are You There God? It's Me Margaret" by Judy Blume.
Synopsis from the back cover of the book:
No one told Margaret Simon that 11 going on 12 would be such a hard age. When her family moves to New Jersey, she has to adjust to life in the suburbs, a different school and a whole new group of friends. Everything is changing. And there are some things about growing up that are hard to talk about, even with your best friends. So Margaret finds someone else to talk to.
  • The things we learn about Sun and Jin:
Sun learned English from a newly returned from America Jae Lee.
Jin believes if they have a child it may convince Sun's father to give Jin a "safer" job.
Sun and Jin have fertility problems.
  • Endometriosis (mentioned by Dr. Kim) is one of the most common causes of infertility in women, and is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus is also found elsewhere in the body.
  • When Jin tried to stop Bernard from fishing for oysters with pearls in them, he probably knew that all oysters can secrete pearls, but those from edible oysters have no market value. In fact, in a haul of three tons of oysters, only around three or four oysters produce perfect pearls.
  • Info on Papaya (mentioned by Charlie):
Originally from southern Mexico, Central America and northern South America, the papaya is now cultivated in most tropical countries.
Papaya is rich in an enzyme called papain- a protease which is useful in tenderizing meat.
The black seeds are edible and have a sharp, spicy taste. They are sometimes ground up and used as a substitute for black pepper.
  • Henry Gale drew the map for Ana-Lucia on the back of the title page of the book “The Brothers Of Karamazov” by Alexander Dostoevsky that Locke had previously given him to read.
  • Gale's map mentions mountains, a cliff, a ridge, going uphill towards mountains, going around the mountain, a jungle, a stream, a forest and the balloon in small clearing. You may also notice that the first time that the map is seen is different from the second time. The map shown during the second time has more details and words on it.
  • Locke has taken to calling the hatch "My Hatch" and Sun calls the garden "My Garden".

  • The song playing while Locke exercises in the bunker is Les McCann's "Compared to What".
  • We learn that Sawyer dropped out of school in the 9th grade.
  • The things we learn about Locke:
Locke owned his own home inspection business. Locke inspected a home for Sayid's gal Nadia.

Welcome Homes [with the outside frame of a home in the background]
    Professional Home Inspections
    John Locke, Owner
    714-555-0115
  • According to Locke about Nadia's house: The seismic bolting is first rate, there's no visible mold, no dry rot and a pretty nice house.
  • Nadia is buying a home from LA Team Realtors.
  • The scripture that the priest reads at Anthony Cooper's funeral is 1 Thessalonians:
"For those who atre alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them the Lord in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will live with the Lord forever"
  • We learn that Anthony Cooper may be the original con man (before Sawyer) by faking his own death in order to avoid paying someone back a large debt, being nice to Locke in order to get Locke's kidney and getting Locke to get his conned money out of the bank.
  • Locke's father had an Oceanic Airlines flight bag when he left the Motel.
  • The name of the Motel Anthony stays at is called the Flightline Motel.
  • After Locke gets out his car at the Motel, an Oceanic Plane flies past in the background.
  • The PA system in the Swan Hatch commences lockdown after a 20 minute warning.
  • The voice in the PA system says:
    "20 minutes to lockdown"
    "17 minutes to lockdown"
"... please proceed... protocol... please proceed..."
    "..9 8 7 6 5 3 2 1"
The vocal countdown could be a warning to get out, the blast doors are supposed lock behind the person, keeping the main area secure while the person goes out to pick up the food.
  • The drop probably occurred because the numbers were continuing to be entered so that the droppers know that people are in the hatch.
  • Upon lockdown, Locke sees a map of the island with the hatches locations in a blue light.
  • The map on the blast door wall during the lockdown has 3 mathematical problems: The square roots of 16, 64 and 225. If you square root each one, it equals 4, 8 and 15.

    Art thou not also real?
Why should'st thou stoop to poor excuse?
Turn on the accuser roundly say "Here am I, here will I remain.
Forever to myself soothfast, go thou, sweet Heaven or at thy pleasure stay.

  • Info on mangos (the poker betting currency exchange):
Referred as the "food of the gods" and can be found in the Hindu Vedas.
The name mango comes from the Malayalam word manga and popularized by the Portuguese after their Indian exploration, hence the word "manga" in Portuguese.
In India, where mangoes are the national fruit, they are thought to help stop bleeding, to strengthen the heart and to benefit the brain.
The mango is in the same family as poison ivy and contains urushiol, though much less than poison ivy.
  • Aspirin (mentioned by Jack) is a drug often used against minor pains and aches. It has also an anticoagulant (blood thinning) effect and is used in long term low doses to prevent heart attacks. In some countries the name is used as a generic term for the drug rather than the manufacturer's trademark. Hippocrates, a Greek physician in the 5th century BC, took a bitter powder extracted from willow bark that could ease aches and pains and reduce fevers. Native American Indians used it for headaches, fever, sore muscles, rheumatism, and chills. The Reverend Edward Stone noted in 1763 that the bark of the willow was effective in reducing a fever. The active extract of the bark, called salicin was isolated to its crystaline form in 1828 by Henri Leroux, a French pharmacist and Raffaele Piria, an Italian chemist, who then succeeded in separating out the acid in its pure state. While their extract was somewhat effective, it also caused digestive and even death when consumed in high doses. In 1897 one of the researches in the Friedrich Bayer & Co. in Germany, greatly reduced the negative effects. Officially, it is claimed that the inventor of aspirin was Felix Hoffmann. On the other hand, Arthur Eichengrün claimed in 1949 that he planned and directed the synthesis of aspirin while Hoffmann's role was restricted to the initial lab synthesis using Eichengrün's process and nothing more.

  • Jack caught onto a card sharks way of dealing out cards with Sawyer: card sharks deal from the bottom instead of the top of the deck and they have carefully dealt themselves a good hand.
  • How to play Texas Hold'Em (a version of poker Hurley, Sawyer, Kate and Jack play):
The game begins with each player being dealt two cards face down (called the hole cards). These are the only cards each player will receive individually and they will only be revealed at the end. Then players participate in a betting round, beginning with the player to the dealer’s left and continuing clockwise. After the betting round, the dealer deals a burn card, followed by three face-up (called a flop) cards. The flop card is followed by a second betting round. This and all subsequent betting rounds begin with the player to the dealer's left and continue clockwise. After the flop betting round ends, another card is burned and a single card is dealt face-up (called the turn), followed by a third betting round. A final burn card is followed by another single face-up card (called the river), followed by a fourth betting round. If a player bets and all other players fold, then the remaining player is awarded the pot and is not required to show his hole cards. If two or more players remain after the final betting round, a showdown occurs. On the showdown, each player plays the best five cards hand they can make from the seven cards comprising their two hole cards and the five face-up cards. If all the five face-up cards form the player's best hand, then the player is said to be “playing the board” and can only hope to split the pot (the bet money). It is common for players to have closely valued, but not identically ranked hands. If a player’s best hand involves fewer than five cards, such as two pair or three of a kind, then kickers are used to settle ties. If two players have straights (five cards in sequence from the same suit), it often splits the pot. If both players have a flush (all the cards are the same suit), the pot is awarded to the player with the highest flush card which completes a flush and beats the face-up's flush cards. If either player has a card in the flush suit that beats the face-up cards, then the pot is split. Texas hold'em is normally played using small and big blind bets. Antes may be used in addition to blind bets.

  • The food drop included Dharma Initiative's DI9FFTR731 Macaroni And Cheese Dinner- the dinner of deceivers.

    42. (18.) Dave
  • This episode plays on the idea some people believe that the island is a figment of someone's imagination and nothing really happens if no one enters the numbers into the computer.
  • I guess it's true- when one person mentions food everybody comes to find out what it is.
  • We learn that Hurley's stash is a lot bigger than it looked in pervious episodes. In the jungle, Hurley's managed to build a tree pantry, using the giant tropical leaves for cover.
  • The Dharma Initiative food uses generic names for famous trademarked foods such as Fish Crackers (Oyster Crackers), Chocolate Creme Cookies (Oreo Cookies) and [my favorite] Dharmalars (Nabisco brand Mallomars).
  • According to Hurley, you have to twist the top layer of an Oreo/ Chocolate Creme Cookie in order to get the top layer off in one piece.
  • Hurley eats a salad, some chicken breast, celery, peanut butter and fish crackers during this episode.
  • Food, glorious, food: "Dave" mentions to Hurley tacos, graham crackers, hard candy, Marcus' lasagna, cheeseburgers and chili fries.

  • The balloonist Henry Gale's note on the 20 dollar bill:
"Jennifer, well you were right. Crossing the Pacific isn't easy. I owe you a beer. I'm hiking to one of the beaches to start a signal fire. If you're reading this I guess I didn't make it. I'm sorry. I love you, Jenny. Always have; always will. Yours, Henry".
  • The phrase "see you in another life" (said by "Dave") is mentioned for the third time (the other times were from Season 1 Episode 9 Solitary episode by Nadia and Season 2 Episode 1 Man Of Science, Man Of Faith episode by Desmond).
  • We learn that "Dave" is a figment of Hurley's imagination and "Dave" may have been influential in Hurley calling everyone "Dude".
  • Details about Hurley's stay at Santa Rosa Hospital:
Hurley blamed himself for an accident because of his size. (23 people were on a deck meant for a capacity 8 and Hurley came onto the deck and it collapsed killing 2 people. He blamed himself for it and went into a catatonic state of not speaking, sleeping, or going out then overeating to punish himself).
"Dave" urged him to go off his diet and medication.
There is a huge picture of an island on the wall when Hurley is talking to his doctor.
Hurley spent about 2 months at the Santa Rosa Hospital.
Hurley was never good at homework.
Hurley didn't want to discuss the accident with his doctor.
Hurley did not see any significance to Leonard muttering the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 at first, but "Dave" did.
After about 2 months at the hospital, Hurley got a visit from his mom and he is not mad at her for committing him to the hospital anymore.
Libby was also a patient at the hospital when Hurley was there.
  • The things Hurley likes about himself:
I like that I have a good relationship with my mom.
I like making my grandpa, Tito, laugh.
    I like chicken.
  • Info on basketball (inmates are playing the game in the hospital gym):
Basketball is unique in that it was invented by one person, rather than evolving from a different sport.
In early December 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian born physician and minister on the faculty of Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, sought a vigorous indoor game to keep young men occupied during the long New England winters. Legend has it that he nailed a peach basket onto the 10 foot elevated track. The first official basketball game was played in the YMCA gymnasium on January 20, 1892 with nine players on a court just half the size of a present day NBA court.
The name was suggested by one of Naismith's students.
Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball.
The first balls made specially for basketball were brown and it was only in the late 1950's that Tony Hinkle, searching for a ball that would be more visible to players and spectators alike, introduced the orange ball that is now in common use.
  • Info on Clozapine (Hurley's medication):
The only FDA approved medication for treatment resistant schizophrenia and for reducing the risk of suicidal behavior in patients with schizophrenia.
Clozapine was developed by the genetics pharmaceutical company Sandoz.
The psychedelic effects of LSD were also discovered at Sandoz.
  • We learn that Locke got a hairline fracture on his right leg from the blast door wall.
  • Timmy (referenced by Sawyer) was a main character on the TV show "Lassie" which lasted 18 seasons and aired from 1954 to 1974. He and his faithful dog Lassie had many adventures together, some of which resulted in Lassie saving him from danger.
  • Eko did a quick blessing after asking Charlie for help with his structure (dipping his finger into water and doing a sign of a cross on his chest) before resuming work and does not reveal what he is building.
  • Info on Kumbaya (mentioned by Sawyer):
Kumbaya is a 19th century African American folk song.
The translation of Kumbaya is "come by here".
Originally a spiritual, the song enjoyed newfound popularity during the folk revival of the 1960's.
It became associated with the civil rights struggles of that decade.
The melody is believed to be of Gullah or African origin.
  • Sawyer may have come up with a new pop culture catch phrase by referring to Hurley attacking him as Hurley "Hulked-out".
  • The Hulk was (Sawyer's nickname for Hurley) was a Marvel comic book character that was created in 1963. He is the subject of numerous comics and books (1963-Present), TV Cartoons 1966,1982,1996), TV series (1978-1982), TV movies (1988-1990), and motion pictures (2003).
  • Info on the Hulk character from the HulkLibrary.com:
"Caught in the heart of a nuclear explosion, victim of gamma radiation gone wild, Dr. Robert Bruce Banner now finds himself transformed in times of stress into the dark personification of his repressed rage and fury- the most powerful man-like creature to ever walk the Earth: The Incredible Hulk!".
  • Mancala (Libby is sitting at a table in the hospital with a Mancala board on it) is a family of board games played around the World. Mancala games play a role in many African and some Asian societies comparable to that of chess in the Western World. People unfamiliar with mancala games commonly assume there is a particular game with the name Mancala. This perception is helped by marketing which often fails to differentiate variations or gives meaningless names like "Ethiopian" or "Nigerian". Mancala games share a general game play sequence of picking up all seeds from a hole (the strategy) then all the seeds from a hole are dropped one by one into a subsequent hole (known as sowing). The object of mancala games is to capture more seeds than the opponent. At the beginning of a player's turn, they select a hole with seeds that will be sown around the board. This selection is often limited to holes on the current player's side of the board, as well as holes with a certain minimum number of seeds.
  • A Juju (mentioned by "Dave") is an object superstitiously believed to embody magical powers (sometimes used as a fetish, a charm or an amulet in West Africa).
  • Another "Star Wars" reference is mentioned: Dave asks Hurley if he thinks they really blew up the Death Star.
  • The Man Formally Known As Henry Gale reveals some insight into the Dharma Initiative Swan Hatch's computer:
Supposedly, he never pressed the numbers into the computer
He observed the counter went to 000:00 then the boxes started flipping and turning red and black with pictures of hieroglyphics on them.
A loud chucking is heard and a humm like a big magnet then nothing.
    The counter flips to 108:00.
  • The Numbers spotted:
Dave asks Hurley what Lenny will do if he steals his snack, call him 23?
Hurley walked onto a deck built for 8 people, but containing 23 people.
Henry states he was part of a party that found the real Henry 4 months ago.
    Lenny repeats 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 over and over.
    Dave repeats 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 ending with hike.
  • This is the first episode to end with a flashback.

    43. (19.) SOS
  • This episode's title is the commonly used description for the International Morse Code distress signal. This distress signal was first adopted by the German government in radio regulations on April 1, 1905 and became the worldwide standard when it was included in the second International Radiotelegraphic Convention on November 6, 1906 and became effective on July 3, 1908. The SOS distress signal consisted of a continuous sequence of three dots/three dashes/three dots, all run together. In International Morse Code, three dots form the letter S, and three dashes equal the letter O, so "SOS" became an easy way to remember the correct order of the dots and dashes. In popular usage, SOS became associated with phrases such as "Save Our Souls" and "Save Our Ship".
  • Names of some of the "extra" castaways: Jenkins, Rolf, Neil (or that Frogurt guy), Craig and Richard.
  • Ana-Lucia is seen talking on the phone while sitting across from Bernard and Rose at the airport (Ana-Lucia had just excused herself from the bar where she was talking to Jack to make a phone call- shown Season 1 Episode 24 Exodus episode)
  • The things we learn about Bernard and Rose:
Rose and Bernard visited Niagara Falls.
Rose and Bernard are residents of Buffalo, New York Bernard and Rose met when Bernard helped Rose get her car out of the snow.
    Bernard proposed after 5 months.
Bernard was a bachelor of 56 years.
Rose has cancer (although, she does not say her condition is cancer). She had been in remission for years but it had returned. Doctors give her a 1 year survival prognosis.
They were in the Australian Outback on their honeymoon. Bernard heard of some faith healer in the Outback who can harness magnetic energy to heal people. Upon their first meeting, Isaac couldn't do anything for her. She had told Bernard that he had "healed her" so he wouldn't keep trying to find ways to prolong her life.
Rose, as Locke does, believes that the island heals people and has special powers.
  • Rose saw Locke in the wheelchair at the airport. They never discussed this when she saw Locke walking on the island.
  • Based on the view of Niagara Falls behind Rose and Bernard, the restaurant would have to be located on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.
  • Violinists play the Roger Eden’s song "The Right Girl For Me" when Bernard proposes to Rose.
  • Rose said she wanted to vacation on a beach for her honeymoon. In fact, this is what she got now.
  • Eko finally confirmed that he and Charlie are building a church.
  • The National Flashback paper's main headlines are: "Miracle In the Outback", "winning lottery numbers" and "personal horoscope".
  • The text from the brochure “Isaac of Uluru, Healer”:
"Isaac Of Uluru is an Australian Spiritual Healer. He helps to ease pain and to restore people's health as a spiritual healer and masseur for more than 25 years. Born in 1949, Isaac has been in demand for the remarkable results he has achieved in helping people recover from many years for the remarkable cure of injuries, health issues, emotional issues and so called incurable physical and mental diseases"

By definition, the word "healing" means to restore one's health or being.
  • Info on Uluru (seen on the brochure):
Uluru, or Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone rock formation in central Australia, in the Northern Territory.
It is located in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
Uluru is sacred to the Aborigines and has many springs, waterholes, rock caves and ancient paintings.
The word has no special meaning in the local Pitjantjatjara language, rather, it is a local family name.
Uluru is notable for appearing to change color as the different light strikes it at different times of the day and year, with sunset a particularly remarkable sight.
  • Info on the name Isaac (the healer's name):
Isaac was the son of Sarah and Abraham and the father of Jacob and Easu.
Sarah choose the name Isaac, because the angel promised that she should become a mother, she being beyond the age of having children privately laughed at the prediction.
Isaac was the child of promise.
When he was 25, Isaac was "offered up" as a sacrifice by his father. But an angel of the Lord prevented the sacrifice and provided him with another sacrifice (a goat).
  • Some of the things seen on Isaac's wall display: a picture of an upside down Golden Gate Bridge, a picture of a pot of gold with rainbow, a letter with a San Francisco return address, a picture of The White House, a kid's drawing of an island with two mountains and a river, various postcards, an orchid, a crop symbol, several pictures of The Wheel of life symbol, a picture of an oil rig, a picture of a green neon cresant facing down, a picture of a hot air balloon, a picture of a house with beige exterior, a picture of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial, a picture of a lighthouse, 3 pictures of hearts in different colors, a blue sign with "No Crutches" written on it, various thank you cards (many written by children), various pictures of people (many who bear a resemblance to one of the castaways) and various letters.
  • There are crutches hanging from the high ceiling in Isaac's place.
  • A wheelchair is folded up and placed next to the wall display.
  • Info on The Wheel of life (seen in Isaac's wall display):
In the dharmic religions (Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism), The Wheel of life represents the continuous cycle of birth, life, death.
The simpler form of The Wheel of life (seen on Isaac's wall display) has eight spokes and is primarily used only in Buddhism.
The eight spokes represent the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism. They are said to have sharp edges to cut through ignorance.
Its overall circular shape represents the perfection of the dharma teaching.
The hub (or the center of the wheel) stands for discipline, which is the essential core of meditation practice.
The rim, which holds the spokes, refers to mindfulness that holds everything together.
  • Info on the Golden Gate Bridge (seen in Isaac's wall display):
Golden Gate Bridge which connects Berkley, California and San Francisco, California.
It was one of the largest suspended arch bridges in the World when it was built in 1937.
The bridge was the brainchild of Joseph Strauss, an engineer responsible for over 400 drawbridges.
A unique aspect of the bridge's construction was the safety net set up beneath it to reduce the expected number of falls for such a project. 11 men were killed during construction with 10 of the deaths occurring near completion when the net itself failed under the stress of a scaffold fall. The 19 workers whose lives were saved by the safety nets became proud members of the (informal) Halfway to Hell Club.
  • Info on The White House (seen in Isaac's wall display):
The White House is in neoclassical style.
The White House was built after Congress established the District Of Columbia as the permanent capital of the United States on July 16, 1790.
President George Washington helped select the site along with city planner Pierre L'Enfant.
The building architect James Hoban's design was modeled after the first and second floors of Leinster House in Dublin, Ireland. It is now the seat of the Irish Parliament.
Fire set by the British destroyed the original White House's interior and much of the exterior during the War Of 1812.
The name "Executive Mansion" was often used in official context until President Theodore Roosevelt established the formal name by having "The White House" engraved on his stationery in 1901.
Modifications (most notably a West wing added in the early 20th century, an East wing added in 1942 and a third level built along with a balcony in 1948) have changed The White House from it's original appearance.
  • Dr. Giggles (mentioned by Sawyer about Jack) was a B horror movie made in 1992 which is centered on a psychopathic son who escapes from a mental institution to exact revenge on the town where his mass murdering doctor father was captured.
  • A fool's errand (mentioned by Rose) is a fruitless mission or undertaking.
  • The license plate on Bernard's car has the same numbers as the license plate on Essam's van (seen in Season 1 Episode 21 The Greater Good episode).
  • Info on Niagara Falls (where Bernard proposed to Rose):
Niagara Falls comprises three separate waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls (sometimes called the Canadian Falls), the American Falls and the smaller, adjacent Bridal Veil Falls.
While not exceptionally high, Niagara Falls is very wide.
The name "Niagara" is said to originate from an Iroquois word "Onguiaahra" meaning "The Strait".
Some controversy exists over which European first gave a written, eyewitness description of the Falls.
During the 19th century tourism became popular and it was the area's main industry by mid century.
The enormous energy of Niagara Falls was long recognized as a potential source of power. The first known effort to harness the waters was in 1759, when Daniel Joncairs built a small canal above the Falls to power his sawmill.
Niagara Falls has 150,000 gallons of water fall every second.
  • The song playing on the Swan Hatch's record player towards the end of the episode and in Rose & Bernard's flashback is Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine"
  • Info on Otis Redding:
Otis Redding died in a plane crash in Wisconsin on December 10, 1967 in an accident that also took the lives of four members from his backup band, the Bar-Kays.
Otis Redding's biggest and most notable song "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" was recorded just days before his unfortunate early death.
  • Apparently The Man Formally Known As Henry Gale has given up speaking but can still mess with Locke's mind when Locke is trying to remember and draw the map on the blast door wall.
  • Locke is drawing the map on the blast door wall on a page from the French biography "Poésies Nouvelles" written in 1839 by Alfred de Musset.
    The page translated into English:
Two children born of yesterday will know some more than us.
O young people hearts filled with antique poetry,
Be welcome, dear children of the gods
You have the same age and same engineering.
Soft clearness is blessed that you bring back in our eyes
    Go! how happiness follows you!
It is not chance an inconstant whim which gave birth to you at the same moment.
Your mother is here, it is the MUSE attentive
Which on fire crowned day before eternally.
Obey without fear with the god who inspires to you.
Be unaware of, if it may be, that we speak about you.
They felt sorry for, these agreements, these tears, this soft smile, All your treasures, give them to us little children, let say to us.
  • The claim for the gun ownership: Sawyer questions where Jack got the gun he carries-
This is the gun that Charlie took in the Season 2 Episode 13 The Long Con episode.
Charlie gave this gun to Sayid after Ana-Lucia spotted it in on Charlie in the Season 2 Episode 17 Lockdown episode.
Sayid tried to use the gun to shoot The Man Formally Known As Henry Gale but Ana-Lucia intervened and took the gun in the Season 2 Episode 19 SOS episode.
Ana-Lucia kept it until Jack stated he was going out into the jungle, at which point Ana-Lucia gives Jack the gun in the Season 2 Episode 19 SOS episode.
  • Info on Guinness World Records (mentioned by Sawyer):
The book itself holds a world record, as the best selling copyrighted series of all time.
The first edition was published in 1955, commissioned by the Guinness brewery after a debate between Guinness managing director Hugh Beaver and hunting partners over the fastest species of European game bird could not be settled with existing reference books.
It was researched by Ross and Norris McWhirter, twin brothers who were noted British athletes and journalists, and at the time ran a fact finding agency in London. When the book became a surprise hit, many further editions were printed, eventually settling into a pattern of one revision each year, published in October to coincide with Christmas sales. The McWhirters continued to publish it and related books for many years.
The ousting of Norris McWhirter from his consulting role in 1995, and the subsequent decision by Diageo to sell the Guinness World Records brand, has shifted the emphasis from that of a text heavy reference book, to a highly illustrated, colorful product, specifically targeted at the interests of boys in the 9-13 age group. The change has not been universally popular, as the book is no longer intended to be comprehensive. The new, image heavy format has also been criticized for giving too much attention to visually shocking or grotesque "records".
From the back cover of the book: This annual publication is crammed with hundreds of new photographs, over 1,500 new and fully updated records and for the first time a giant gatefold features that really bring these incredible records to life.
  • Michael returns in almost exactly the same way that Claire did in the Season 1 Episode 15 Homecoming episode (stumbling through the bushes and collapsing).
  • The Numbers spotted:
The total number of bullets in Jack’s gun is 15.
Bernard states he had 15 people start working on the sign, but now only 4 are left.
Sawyer sarcastically points out that Kate has only pried 4 mussels loose.
Bernard states he had 15 people start working on the sign, but now only 4 are left.
Locke tells Rose that Jack said it will take 4 weeks for his leg to heal.

    44. (20.) Two For The Road
  • Michael's route that he claimed to have taken: he headed north, back to where the Tail Section survivors had been, hiked to the beach and followed the shoreline and saw one of the "Others" a day later. He followed the person to their camp.
  • Michael's observations about the "Others":
They live in tents and teepees.
    They eat dried fish.
He didn't see the boat (seen in the Season 1 Episode 24 Exodus episode).
Fish makes up most of their diet.
    There are 22 of them.
    They are not heavily armed.
Most of them are old and half of them are women.
He did not see any kids, Walt or adults who were abducted.
There wear simple worn clothing and no shoes.
He saw two guards with guns guarding an underground steel door with a Dharma Initiative logo on the door.
He thinks that Walt is in this hatch.
He seemed to believe they were basically unarmed and can be overtaken.
    He calls the "Others" animals.
  • The things we learn about Ana-Lucia:
Ana-Lucia quit the police force after her mom found out that Ana-Lucia shot and lied about killing the robbery suspect who wounded her previously.
Ana-Lucia took a job as a airport security guard.
Ana-Lucia met Christian Shepard (Jack's dad) at an airport bar in Los Angeles and he convinced her to come with him to Sydney to basically drive him around while he drinks (or as Christian puts it "for protection") and to run away from her problems.
Christian Shepard wanted Ana-Lucia to call him "Tom" and wanted to call Ana-Lucia "Sarah" (after his concerned daughter-in-law).
Both Jin and Ana-Lucia were behind Jack in the Oceanic Airlines check-in line when Jack is arguing with the ticket clerk Chrissy about his father's coffin.
Ana-Lucia uses her cell phone (with Rose and Bernard sitting across from her- seen in Season 2 Episode 19 SOS episode) to call her mom prior to the flight.
  • Pulling up to The Last Call Cocktail Bar, Sawyer is walking by Ana-Lucia and Christian Shepard's car. When Christian opens his car door, Sawyer runs into it. Sawyer then utters the phrase “I’m walkin’ here!” which is the same thing that that Dustin Hoffman's character Rizzo yells in the movie "Midnight Cowboy" when he is almost run over by a cab.
  • We learn that Christian Shepard has a daughter in Sydney, Australia.
  • We learn that Mike is the bartender's name at the Los Angeles Airport bar.
  • Before he attacked Ana-Lucia, The Man Formally Known As Henry Gale whispered "We are scientists".
  • The Kasey Chambers' song “Hard Way” is playing when Christian turns on the car radio when Christian and Ana-Lucia are driving to his daughter's home.
  • While Ana-Lucia and Christian are driving to his daughter's home on a rainy night, the Patsy Cline song "I'm Walkin' After Midnight" is playing on the car radio.
  • We learn that Hurley used to watch "The Flintstones" quite often while he was in the Santa Ana Hospital.
  • Hurley tells Libby he was in the hospital because he "broke his hip".
  • Hurley mentions the song "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel from the movie "Say Anything" to Sayid. Sayid told Hurley that he can't get the radio to work. Hurley claims that if he holds the radio over his head, just like Lloyd Dobler (actor John Cusack) in the movie "Say Anything", with the radio played "In Your Eyes" he will win Libby over.
The synopsis of the movie "Say Anything": High school senior Lloyd Dobler wants nothing more than to go out with beautiful and intelligent Diane Court. Lloyd attempts to win her heart over the objections of her over protective father before Diane leaves for a scholarship in England.
  • We learn that Sayid once took Shannon to a beautiful beach 3 kilometers from the castaways beach.
  • We learn that Rose and Bernard took some of the Dharma Initiative wine from the food drop.
  • According to The Man Formally Known As Henry Gale the "Man In Charge" is a great and brilliant but is not a forgiving man.
  • According to Ana-Lucia, The Man Formally Known As Henry Gale now has been locked up for over a week.
  • The Man Formally Known As Henry Gale reveals that he had been coming to get Locke when he got caught in Rousseau's net.
  • Sawyer is reading the Gary Troup manuscript "Bad Twin".
  • Little Red Riding Hood (mentioned by Sawyer) known printed version was known as “Le Petit Chaperon Rouge” and had its origins in 17th century French folklore in 1697 by Charles Perrault. This version is both more sinister and more overtly moralized than the later ones. The story had as its subject an "attractive, well bred young lady", a village girl of the country being deceived into giving a wolf she encountered the information he needed to successfully find her grandmother's house and eat the old woman while at the same time avoiding being noticed by woodcutters working in the nearby forest. Then he proceeded to lay a trap for the Red Riding Hood. The story ends with the girl eaten by the wolf. The wolf emerges the victor of the encounter and there is no happy ending. The brothers Grimm further revised the story and it reached its final and better known version in the 1857 edition of their work. This widely known version is about a girl who travels through the woods to deliver food to her grandmother.
  • Brutus (mentioned by Sawyer) was the most famous of Julius Caesar's assassins.
  • The second (unmarried) couple to get it on was Sawyer and Ana-Lucia.
  • Above all what we learn from this episode: if you ever go on a picnic, always bring the blanket and the wine before you start out on the picnic and parents & their kids should never work together.
  • The gun closet combination is now 18 right, 1 left and 31 right.
  • Ana-Lucia still has the old Army knife she found from the Season 2 Episode 7 The Other 48 Days episode.
  • The Numbers spotted:
The number 15 appears on top of a police car in the parking lot.
The number 16 appears on top of a police car in the parking lot.
Jack tells Crissy in 16 hours he needs to land in Los Angeles.
The number 23 appears on top of a police car in the parking lot.
Ana-Lucia states Christian spent 4 days drinking and doing nothing.
The number 42 appears on top of a police car in the parking lot.

    45. (21.) ? X marks the spot
  • The "?" indicates the location of another hatch- The Pearl. It can be spotted from above because the opening is marked with red salt shaped like a ? around it.
  • Eko and Locke find the ? area is the same place where Boone climbed into the tree to get into a plane hanging in the tree and then the plane fell killing him.
  • The things found in the Pearl Hatch by Locke and Eko:
9 TV monitors (when Eko and Locke entered the room, one monitor was turned on showing the Sawn Hatch and another monitor had white noise on the screen)
    A VCR
    2 large black leather chairs
A small white square trays attached to the chair
A print out of the numbers being entered into the computer and the time and date it was done and the word "Accepted"
A computer printer (when Eko and Locke walked in the room, the printer is still are printing out information)
A computer monitor similar to the Swan Hatch's computer (the computer screen has the words ">:Print Log? Y/N" on it)
    A pneumatic tube
Tube canisters to put the used notebook into the pneumatic tube
    A shelf with blank notebooks
    A VCR tape labeled "Orientation"
    A camera above the monitors
    2 storage closets
    A first aid box
  • The things you would expect to find in the Pearl Hatch but do not:
A bathroom (Note: Are the writers pulling a "Star Trek"? In Star Trek, no one has a bathroom in his or her quarters and no one seems to notice)
    Food
    A kitchen
Pens or pencils for writing in the notebooks
If you have pencils, it may be nice to have a pencil sharpener and spare erasers
  • Information from The Orientation for the Pearl Hatch VHS tape includes:
It begins with the graphic "The Dharma Initiative 5 of 6 Orientation"
Then "Orientation- Station 5- The Pearl" with a Dharma Initiative logo
A younger looking Dr. Candle, who calls himself Dr. Mark Wickman, appears to have use of both arms and uses the name Marc Wickman.
The VHS tape confirms the Sawn Hatch is a psychological experiment.
The Pearl Hatch people are told that the Swan Hatch people's job is of the utmost importance.
The Pearl Hatch people are to record in notebooks of all the activities of the people in the Swan Hatch
When a notebook is filled up, the Pearl Hatch people are to bend the notebook into a small tube canister and place it into the pneumatic tube.
The VHS video shows the DeGroots in lab coats observing people exercising.
The Pearl Hatch people need to send the notebooks without error and in sequence.
The Pearl Hatch has the two people taking eight hour shifts for three weeks. In the end of the eight hour shift, they catch the "Pala Ferry to the Barricks".
The VHS tape has a couple of distorted places just before the ending like the Swan Hatch orientation film.
The Orientation video ends like the Swan Hatch orientation film with the graphic “Copyright 1980 by The Hanso Foundation. All Rights Reserved”.
  • Dr. Wickman's parting comment in the Pearl Hatch orientation video, "Namaste", is a Nepalese/ Buddhist word meaning roughly "I salute the god/goddess within you".
  • The Pearl Hatch orientation video mentions some similarities to the book "Island" by Aldous Huxley:
The TV series "Lost" and the book "Island" are both based on an island.
"Pala" is the name of the ferry mentioned in the Pearl Orientation video and the name of the island in the book.
The man in the book gets to "Pala" after he is shipwrecked as does everyone on the "Lost" island.
In the book, "Pala" developed a group living for children (called Mutual Adoption Clubs) so that children would not have exposure to their parents' neuroses. On "Lost", the "Others" kidnap kids and are perhaps creating a society for them.
In the book, the inhabitants of "Pala" enter trance states for super learning and the Dharma Initiative is researching this.
Inhabitants of "Pala" do drug use for enlightenment and self-knowledge. On "Lost" several people have been are injecting themselves with vials of something and Charlie has used heroin on the "Lost" island.
In the book, "Pala" was to be a utopian society, perhaps like the Dharma Initiative's goal.
  • Eko is the one who is most excited by the Pearl Hatch video just like Locke was with the Swan Hatch orientation film.
  • The Pearl Hatch logo is a large white circle.
  • The Pearl Hatch may be named after "The Hymn of the Pearl". It is a passage of the apocryphal Acts of Thomas. The hymn tells the story of a boy, "the son of the king of kings", who is sent to Egypt to retrieve a pearl from a serpent. During the quest, he is seduced by Egyptians and forgets his origin and his family. However, a letter is sent from the king of kings to remind him of his past. When the boy receives the letter, he remembers his mission, snatches the pearl, and returns. The hymn is commonly interpreted as a mystic view of the human condition, that we are lost in a world of matter and do not remember our true origin, but God sends a message, by way of Jesus, to make us remember through gnosis (the Greek word for knowledge).
  • The type of salt used around the plane is mercury sulfide.
  • Eko made the observation that the "?" was salted so nothing can grow.
  • A Padre (mentioned by Mr. Caldwell about Mr. Eko) is a commonly used term for a military chaplain in the British Armed Forces. "Padre" is the common term of address for all chaplains by all ranks. All chaplains are commissioned officers and wear uniform. British Army and Royal Air Force chaplains bear ranks and wear rank insignia, but Royal Navy chaplains do not, wearing a cross and the officers' cap badge as their only insignia.
  • We learn that Sawyer has been keeping the guns buried under his tent.
  • Libby's death is similar to Boone's death:
Boone and Libby were attempted to be saved by Jack, but he failed and was forced to let them die.
Jack also closed her eyes like he did to Boone.
Hurley didn't realize Libby was shot until it was too late to do anything, like Shannon didn't know Boone was hurt until it was too late.
Libby and Boone both got the same death music. [nice touch producers/ writers]
  • We learn that Libby initially survives her two bullets much to Michael's surprise and worry.
  • Libby's death makes her the first character to die without her own a flashback episode.
  • Trying to make Libby more comfortable, Jack gave her a shot of heroin from one the packets in the Virgin Mary statues).
  • Info on last rites or the atoning of the sick (Eko gives Ana-Lucia last rites):
The sacrament of anointing of the sick gives grace for the state into which people enter through sickness.
Through the sacrament is given a gift of the Holy Spirit that renews confidence and faith in God and strengthens against temptations to discouragement and anguish at the thought of death.
The priest anoints the sick person's forehead with oil (usually in the form of a cross), saying: "Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit".
The ritual is not associated with nearness to death and there is not necessarily any reference to forgiveness of sins.
Catholic theology requires that administration of the sacrament be by a validly ordained priest [note to Eko], and thus holds that the rite in question, though helpful, like any prayer, for the sick person, is not a valid sacrament or channel of grace.
  • The things seen in Eko's dream:
Ana-Lucia talking to him on the beach then Ana-Lucia with the two gun shots and blood coming out of her mouth.
A body floating in water shortly after the plane crash.
Eko's cross necklace lying discarded in Nigeria.
The "Others" walking by as Eko and Jin hide carrying teddy bear.
    A campfire.
Jin being held captive by Eko and Ana-Lucia.
Virgin Mary statues for sale in front of Yemi's church.
Charlie and Eko watching the drug runner plane burn.
Yemi talking to Eko in the church.
Campfire burning inside The Arrow Hatch.
Bible that Eko found in The Arrow Hatch.
Eko carving Bible verses into his walking stick.
Eko finding his friend Goldie on the island.
    Eko talking to Locke.
    Eko confronting the "Monster".
Eko taking back his cross necklace from Yemi's body.
The drug runner plane taking off in Nigeria.
Nigerian military coming after the drug runners.
Yemi being shot by the military.
Dr. Marvin Candle in the Swan Hatch Orientation film.
  • We learn that Eko didn't honor his dead brother by actually becoming a priest. Eko was posing as a priest under an assumed name of Father Tundi in Australia. He bought forged ID papers still pretending to be a priest.
  • Eko's Australian passport shows:
    Name/ Nom
    Oduduwa

  • The opposite page of Eko's and all Australian passports says:
"The Government-General of the Commonwealth of Australia being the representative in Australia of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, requires all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford him or her every assistance and provocation of which he or she may stand in need"
  • We learn that Eko was going on a trip to the United States. However, he had to postpone the trip because Eko's Monsignor sent him to investigate a "miracle" of a young girl named Charlotte Markin. She supposedly drowned then came back to life the next day.
  • We learn that Richard Markin was also Claire's psychic (who was featured in the Season 1 Episode 10 Raised by Another episode. He told Eko that he has been faking his psychic abilities. He states that Charlotte went into hypothermia which made her appear dead and the undertaker was just trying to cover up his own negligence.
  • The transcript of Charlotte's autopsy audio tape:
Ian McVay: Caucasian female, she's 161 centimeters, 51.3 kilos. Body prepped and washed by the very lovely Valarie McCavish.
    Valerie McCavish: Ian, stop it.
Ian McVay: Commencing with the post. This is uh... a clear case of drowning. I'll begin with a thoracic...
[Screams are heard on the audio tape]
Valarie McCavish: Oh my God! She's alive! She's alive! Stop! Stop!
[More screams and yelling are heard and Ian McVay stops and ejects the tape]
  • Eko is surprised to find Charlotte giving him a message from his deceased brother Yemi. Yemi knew Eko was going to see Charlotte, Yemi (through Charlotte) says that Eko is a good priest and Yemi has faith in Eko.
  • We learn that Libby and Eko saw each other at the airport prior to the flight.
  • The Numbers spotted:
The date 15 April 14 can be seen on Mr. Eko’s forged passport.
When Mr. Eko spots Charlotte, the PA announcer states gate 16 is boarding.
When Mr. Eko spots Charlotte, the PA announcer states everyone can board gate 16B.
The date 16 April 04 can be seen on Mr. Eko’s forged passport.
The ticket agent tells Mr. Eko that Flight 815 is boarding at gate 23.
The date 23 August can be seen on Mr. Eko’s forged passport.
Mark Whitman states that The Pearl team will work 8 hour shifts.
Mark Whitman states that teams are to return to the barracks after their 8 hour shift.
The date August 23 (8th month of year) can be seen on Mr. Eko’s forged passport.

    46. (22.) Three Minutes
  • The three minutes in the title of this episode has to do with the time Michael was allowed to see Walt at the "Others" camp.
  • The computer screen between Michael and Walt (Computer):
    Michael: ajd;kfjlajdfsoaipjopajsj [typing gibberish]
    Michael: >: You okay?
Computer: ok. no time. come soon
Michael: >: I'm ready. Coming NOW. You said north --north WHERE?
Computer: when they take me out, there's huge rocks with a big HOLE in the middle by the beach. You'll know when you see.
Michael: It's gonna be okay. I'm coming.

  • Things that we learn about Michael's missing 13 days:
According to his compass Michael headed East and sees black smoke.
Michael was gagged and listened to Jack and the Bearded "Other" Mr. Friendly's conversation from Season 2 Episode 11 The Hunting Party episode.
Alex Rousseau tries to find out what happened to Claire and her baby from Michael.
The 7 shots heard by Jack, Locke and Sawyer from Season 2 Episode 11 The Hunting Party episode were from Michael's struggle with the Bearded "Other" Mr. Friendly and another male "Other" called Pickett.
Michael saw Kate while he was gagged and a bag was over her head.
In order be set free and to get Walt back, Michael had to free The Man Formally Known As Henry Gale and bring Jack, Sawyer, Hurley and Kate to the "Others" camp.
Walt is being kept in a "room" while the "Others" do tests on him.
  • The hatch at the "Others" camp has a Dharma Initiative logo with a vertical rectangle in the middle and a Dharma Initiative logo on the door.
  • We learn that the Bearded "Other" Mr. Friendly knows how to use a bola.
  • A mysterious black woman "Other" calling herself Ms. Klugh asks Michael some questions about Walt:

  • Accessing their stock we learn that the castaways have 11 rifles and pistols left.
  • The Halliburton case is continuing to show wear and tear.
  • Thanks to Vincent, Charlie finds the last of the Virgin Mary statues in Sawyer's unburied gun stash and proceeds to get rid of them by throwing them into the ocean.
  • It appears that building the church is on hold since Eko got back from the Pearl Hatch and Charlie unsuccessfully tries to continue on. [I guess that's the story of Charlie's life]
  • Charlie is slowly gaining Claire's trust when he gives her a small suitcase (with the Dharma Initiative logo in it) full of "vaccination" vials and an injector for Aaron.
  • According to the label of the vaccination vial, it only has to be injected every 9 days.
  • Info on Grape Ape (Sawyer's nickname's for Hurley):
The Great Grape Ape was a Saturday morning cartoon on ABC from 1975 to 1978. The character is a 40 foot tall gorilla who loves grapes so much, he goes bananas! His catchphrase is repeating his name twice ("Grape Ape, Grape Ape") after anything anyone says, usually as a form of agreement or acknowledgement of what was said.

Michael is released in order to bring Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley to the "Others" camp.
Michael demands a boat for him and Walt to escape the island if he brings Jack, Kaye, Sawyer and Hurley to the "Others" camp.
  • Info on the movie "The Dirty Dozen" (mentioned by Sawyer):
It is 1944 and the Allied Armies stand ready for a major invasion of Germany from bases in England. A Major with an attitude problem and a history of getting things done is told to interview military. prisoners with death sentences or long terms for a dangerous mission. They parachute behind enemy lines and guess that there have been 60-65 days for the German Generals at a rest house on the eve of D-Day.

Ms. Klugh hands Michael a list with 4 names on it.
The numbers 4 and 8 are visible on Michael’s compass.
Charlie gives Claire the vaccine kit which contains 8 vials.
The numbers 4 and 8 are visible on Michael’s compass.
  • The tents the others use are similat to yurts- a round, semi-permanent tent used in Mongolia, Africa, Russia, Afganstain and Pakistain.

    47. and 48. (23. and 24.) Live Together, Die Alone
  • Desmond reappears after running out of the Swan Hatch some 4 weeks ago in his boat drunk and trying to shoot himself.
  • Desmond is playing "Voi Che Sapete" from The Magic Flute by Mozart on the boat.
  • Two types of passwords are asked by old inhabitants of the Swan Hatch to new Swan Hatch inhabitants are: "What do the two snowmen say to each other?... Smells like carrots" and "Are you him?".
  • The things we learn about Desmond:
Desmond found that he can't get away from the island saying he headed due West at 9 knots and should have landed at Fiji in less than a week.
His full name is Desmond David Hume.
He was a Lance Corporal in the Royal Scots Regiment English Armed Forces.
He was jailed for insorbination and dishonorably discharged from the Royal Scots Regiment English Armed Forces.
Desmond left prison with a set of keys, a gold plated pocket watch, a photograph (the same picture Desmond had in the Swan Hatch) and the book Charles Dickens' "Our Mutual Friend".
The one love in his life is Penelope Widmore. Her father, Charles Widmore, attempted to pay Desmond off but, he refuses and decides to enter a boat race that is being sponsored by Penelope’s father. Desmond wants to win the race just to spite her dad.
Penelope discovers Desmond is in the United States training for the boat race around the World and surprises him by showing up at the University campus stadium where he was going to run up the stairs (and encounters Jack from Season 2 Episode 1 Man Of Science, Man Of Faith episode).
Desmond says he has read everything Charles Dickens has written except one book. The one book Desmond intends to be the last book he ever reads is Charles Dickens' "Our Mutual Friend". Penelope had written a note inside the book unknown to Desmond until he was alone on the island without Kelvin.
Desmond's first moments on the island were a haze. People in yellow protective suits with oxygen masks running around and being dragged unconscious into the Swan Hatch by Kelvin.
Desmond had experienced what happens to the computer if it reaches 000:00 (the hieroglyphics instead of numbers, the place shakes and magnetic things move closer to the magnetic wall) and he didn't realize the consequences of it until later.
  • We learn that Desmond gave Locke a sign to continue what he is doing on the island by Desmond turning on the light inside as Locke is pounding on the Swan Hatch window (seen in Season 1 Episode 19 Dues Ex Machina episode).
  • We learn that Locke indirectly saved Desmond's life. Desmond was about to read his Charles Dickens' "Mutual Friend" book when he heard a knock on the Swan Hatch's little window (seen in Season 1 Episode 19 Dues Ex Machina episode).
  • After Desmond and Locke initial communication, it was three days later that the Swan Hatch window is blasted open and Kate, Locke and Jack enter the Swan Hatch for the first time.
  • Penelope's letter to Desmond inside Desmond's copy of Charles Dickens' "Our Mutual Friend" book:
"Dearest Des, I am writing this letter to you as you leave for prison. And I've hidden in the one place you would turn to in a moment of great desperation. I know you go away with the weight of what happened on your shoulders. And I know the only person who can ever take it off is you. Please don't give up, Des. Because all we really need to survive is one person who truly loves us. And you have her. I will wait for you. Always. I love you, Pen"
  • According to the brochure about the boat race, Charles Widmore is an industrialist and philanthropist.
  • The International Open Ocean Racing Commission and the Widmore Corporation sponsored the boat race.
  • Penelope Widmore's address:
    30 Dowsmore Gardens
    Knights Bridge, London
    SW4 8PS
  • Desmond's address:
    Soothway Garrison
    42 Berichurch Road
    Halstead, Essex CO8
  • We learn that Penelope Widmore lives in Knightsbridge, the same place Lucy Heatherton lives (seen in Season 1 Episode 7 The Moth episode).
  • The Widmore Corporation, owned by Charles Widmore, has a construction company (a sign seen in Season 2 Episode 12 Fire + Water episode) and a pregnancy test supplier (seen in Season 2 Episode 16 The Whole Truth).
  • We learn that the Bearded "Other" Mr. Friendly's first name is "Tom".
  • We learn that Ms. Kleugh's first name is "Bea".
  • Jack's quote to Michael "Live together, die alone" was mentioned by Jack to the whole group in Season 1 Episode 5 White Rabbit episode.
  • The things we learn about Kelvin Inman:
Kelvin knew how to take two different wires to get the blast door to come down.
Kelvin was the CIA operative who interrogating Sayid in the Season 2 Episode 14 One Of Them episode.
Kelvin insisted to Desmond that the Swan Hatch orientation film always be stored back behind the book "Turn of the Screw" on the bookshelf.
Kelvin claims to know all about the island and draws everything on one of the blast doors. He used laundry detergent, which contains some phosphates that are excited by UV rays.
Kelvin seems to be a disgruntled employee of the Dharma Initiative and planned on deserting Desmond and the Swan Hatch once he got Desmond's boat fixed.
Kelvin managed to fool Desmond into believing the outside world isn't safe for two years by putting on his yellow protective gear and an oxygen mask on everytime he goes outside. Desmond follows him and discovers he is lying and a struggle ensues killing Kelvin.
Kelvin had a fail safe key around his neck and when Kelvin died Desmond took the key with him.
  • The things we learn about Kelvin's former partner, Radzinski:
According to Kelvin, Radzinski has a photographic memory
The blast door map was Radzinski's idea.
Radzinski figured out how to fake a lockdown.
  • The things we learn Libby:
Libby bought Desmond a coffee at a coffee bar and started to talk about the boat race.
Libby's husband, David, had died one month prior to their meeting at the coffee bar.
Libby's husband had a boat that he wanted to sail to the Mediterranean.
Libby's husband called his boat "Elizabeth"- Libby's formal first name and it is based out of Newport Beach.
  • When trapped by Desmond and Locke, Eko finds the original way Kate, Locke and Jack came into the Swan Hatch in Season 2 Episode 1 Man Of Science, Man Of Faith episode.
  • The things we learn about the magnetic properties in the Swan Hatch:
Kelvin (then Desmond) kept a fail safe key which is inserted into a small space deep inside the magnetic wall if the numbers can't be entered into the computer.
The place where you insert the key has a sign that says "Caution: System Termination" and yellow caution stripes.
The numbers being entered discharges a build up a magnetic properties.
If the numbers are not entered, the magnetic properties will overload from build up then suck all magnetic properties out of everything- including planes (hence "The Incident" or a "System Error" as it is known on the computer's print outs).
In addition to the clock turning to hieroglyphics with red or black background the computer screen shows "System Error" many times, a voice on the speaker in the Swan Hatch repeats the words "System Error" many times and the whole island shakes.
  • We learn that the Pearl Hatch was the actual mental test. The notebooks go nowhere and Desmond theorizes it with Locke.
  • Sawyer, joking, brought up his theory about who the "Others" aliens and their heads are made out of prosthetics.
  • Charlie mentions Dr. Arzt to Eko. However, Charlie does not tell Eko who he was or why Charlie mentioned him when handling the dynamite.
  • We learn that Charlie does not know the song "How They Got The Hatch Door Open".
  • We learn that Desmond and Kelvin were able to keep the blast doors down just enough for a space to put a metal cart.
  • Kelvin's obvious reason to Desmond's question as to why Kelvin can paint the The blast door map without seeing what he is doing [kind of like why would someone climb Mount Everest- cause it's there]: "How do you even remember where you left off from?- slowly...very very slowly".
  • What Jack, Sawyer, Kate, Michael and Hurley see on their trek to the "Others" camp:
A rather large green bird comes down and Hurley remarks that it said his name.
The pneumatic tube from the Pearl Hatch with lots of notebooks and canisters plus Locke's map of the blast door map.
The "Others" following them- first detected by Kate.
  • David Hume (Desmond's full name) was a Scottish philosopher, economist and historian who is one of the most important figures of Western philosophy and of the Scottish Enlightenment. Historians most famously see Human philosophy as a thoroughgoing form of skepticism, but many commentators have argued that the element of naturalism has no less importance in Hume's philosophy. Hume was heavily influenced by empiricists like John Locke.
  • Desmond takes a red bag labeled "Abandon Ship Emergency Bag" off the boat.
  • Synopsis "Our Mutual Friend" by Charles Dickens (Desmond's last book):
When the body of John Harmon, the dust-heap's expected heir, is found in the Thames, fortunes change hands surprisingly, raising to new heights "Noddy" Boffin, a low-born but kindly clerk who becomes "the Golden Dustman." Charles Dickens’ last complete novel, Our Mutual Friend encompasses the great themes of his earlier works: the pretensions of the nouveaux riches, the ingenuousness of the aspiring poor, and the unfailing power of wealth to corrupt all who crave it. Our Mutual Friend is a satiric masterpiece about money. The last novel Dickens completed, and perhaps his most angry, it sounds all the great themes of his later work: the innocence and venality of the aspiring poor, the hollow pretensions of the nouveau riche, the unfailing power of wealth to corrupt everyone it touches.
  • A notebook entry from one of the notebooks used by the Pearl Hatch and found by Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Michael and Hurley:
    "0400: S.R. moves ping-pong table again"
    "0415: Takes a shower"
  • A knot (mentioned by Desmond) is a unit of speed
1 knot = 1 nautical mile/hour and 1.852 km/h exactly. This is based on the internationally agreed length of the nautical mile, as adopted by the US in 1954, the UK in 1970 and other countries.
Its use is important for navigational reasons because the length of a nautical mile is almost identical to a minute of latitude.
9 knots is between a waterline length of 36 feet and 50 feet, between a waterline length of 11.0 to 15 meters and used by a family yacht and a small commercial fishing boat or ferry.
  • A Lance Corporal (Desmond's rank) is the lowest ranking non-commissioned officer in the British Army and Royal Marines, between a Private and Corporal.
  • Info on The Royal Scots (Regiment that Desmond was a member):
The Royal Scots were the oldest, and therefore most senior, infantry regiment of the line in the British Army, having been raised in 1633 during the reign of Charles I of Scotland.
The Royal Scots were also known as "First of foot, right of the line and the pride of the British army".
Their nickname was Pontius Pilate's bodyguard, from a legend that prior to the Resurrection Christ's tomb was guarded by Caledonian (Scottish) legionaries. The Royal Scots' claim to be descended from this unit is unsubstantiated. Their claim to ancient roots was blandly repeated some years ago without any actual evidence.
  • The word sod (term used by the Master Sergeant) in British English is a mildly offensive term for a person. Although it can be used in many situations, it has particular connotations of idleness.
  • Locke tells Desmond that the castaways have been on the island for 60-65 days or since September 22, 2004.
  • Part of a large broken giant statue is seen near the "Others" beach by Sayid, Sun and Jin. Only the feet are left. The Feet has 4 toes. The only creature with four human like toes is the Troll. The Troll as a mythical creature first appeared in Scandinavian folklore.
  • Eko is carving the date of the crash "922" into his stick when Desmond and Locke created a lockdown. In the Bible, Revelations Chapters 9 to 22 explains what happens on Judgement Day.
  • The "Others" take Michael, Jack, Hurley, Kate and Sawyer to the Pala Ferry- first mentioned in the Pearl Hatch Orientation video.
  • The men in the plane at the end of the episode were speaking Portuguese.
  • A rook (mentioned by on of the Portuguese men) is a piece in the strategy board game of chess. Each player starts with two rooks, one in each of the corners nearest their own side. The rook moves horizontally or vertically, forward or back, through any number of unoccupied squares. Like other pieces, it captures by occupying the square on which an enemy piece stands. The rook also participates, along with the king, in a special move called castling. Castling consists of moving the king two squares towards a rook, then moving the rook onto the square over which the king crossed. Originally, the rook symbolized a chariot. However, in the West, the rook is almost universally represented as a fortified tower. Rooks are most powerful towards the end of a game, where they can move unobstructed by pawns and control large numbers of squares.
  • The computer indicates that the men on the plane had discovered:
    >/7418880
    Electromagnetic
    Anomaly
    Detected
  • The numbers spotted;
Penny Widmore lives at 23 Danismore Gardens.
Libby tells Desmond not to worry about the coffee cause it’s just 4 bucks.
Sayid points out that the statue’s foot has only 4 toes.
The PA system counts down to zero passing 4 along the way.
Dr. Marvin Candle states in the film that you have 4 minutes to enter the code.
Michael explains that he had to bring all 4 of the people on the list.
Penelope’s address has the zip code SW4 8PS.
Libby asks Desmond what he needs 42 grand for.
Desmond Hume lives at Southway Garrison 42 Berechurch Road.
