After entertaining British troops, Clark made her film debut in 1944. By the dawn of the 1950's she was a superstar throughout the U.K. Still, Clark struggled with her inability to shed her adolescent image. In 1961, she married and relocated to France, establishing a strong fan base there. Clark was finally able to penetrate the U.S. market in 1964 with the Grammy-winning "Downtown", the first single by a British woman ever to reach number one on the American pop charts. In addition to hosting her own BBC series, she also starred in the 1968 NBC television special Petula. As the 1960's drew to a close, Clark's commercial stature slipped, although in 1968 she revived her film career for a short time. In later years Clark focused primarily on international touring, headlining the 1981 London revival of "The Sound of Music". In 1990, she starred and co-wrote the musical "Someone Like You". • Info on Bridgeville, California (mentioned by Locke):
The 83 acre town became famous in 2002 for being the first in history to be put up for auction on eBay. It was originally sold for $1.77 million but the buyer backed out of the deal only for it to be bought by businessman Bruce Krall for $700,000.
Bridgeville is a town in Humboldt County north of San Francisco, California.
  • The airport scene in Locke's vision featured:
Boone covered in blood with his shirt torn (Boone looks as he did in Locke's dream from the Season 1 Episode 19 Deus Ex Machina episode).
Locke once again needs his wheelchair because he has been rendered a cripple.
Boone pushes Locke in his wheelchair is an allegory for the current status of the survivors on the island.
Charlie and Claire are together and caring for Aaron. Charlie is clean (and sober) and Claire and Aaron look vital, happy and healthy.
Sun and Jin are standing in line waiting and Boone tells Locke that Sayid will take care of them.
Hurley, as the gate attendant, is the message bearer and is waiting to deliver it.
Desmond, as a pilot walking with some flight attendants, can take care of himself.
Kate and Sawyer, looking very much a couple, are in the security line together.
Jack is being scanned by airport security agent Ben and is in line alone.
Eko’s stick is bloody and Eko is not in the airport, which indicates that he is missing and in trouble.
The image of an angry polar bear's face.
  • When his speech is impaired, Locke makes a funny illustration for Charlie that Locke needs to talk to the island. However, the drawing was cut from the episode.
  • Locke finds that Eko's walking stick contains the words: "John 3:05", "Lift up your eyes and look North", "Gen 13:14", "Rom 6:21" and "Acts 4:12")
  • Romans 6:21 (on Eko's walking stick):
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
  • John 3:05 (on Eko's walking stick):
Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless he is born of water and of the spirit".
  • Genesis 13:14 (on Eko's walking stick):
The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west
  • Acts 4:12 (on Eko's walking stick):
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under Heaven given to men by which we must be saved.
  • The things we learn about Eddie:
He is a officer with the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department
He is wearing a Geronimo Jackson shirt
The Geronimo Jackson's shirt belonged to his father
His full name is Edward F. Colburn
    He has badge number 84023
He stayed with the commune for 6 weeks
According to Eddie, Locke is not a murderer, a good man and a farmer
His Mom is dead and his Dad is a drunk
Eddie was looking to do some logging work
  • The Numbers spotted:
4, 8 and 23, are in Eddie's police badge number.
  • Members of the commune include: Bobby (a little kid), Mike (a leader), Jan (a leader), Lizzy (a member) and Kim (a member).
  • Sweat lodge info:
A sweat lodge is a ceremonial sauna used by North American First Nations or Native American peoples.
Traditionally it is built with a frame of willow branches, which are long, thin and very flexible. During the ceremony, the participants encircle the stone pit inside the lodge. The medicine man, leader of the ceremony, or elder receives the glowing hot stones from the firekeeper and places them in the pit. When enough stones have been placed in the lodge, the medicine man closes the door and pours water on top of the stones to fill the lodge with steam. This happens usually four times, with periods of between ten minutes to hours spent sweating in the lodge.
  • The Swan Hatch is gone. History. Finieto.:
There is just a large hole.
Locke and Charlie find debris from the Swan Hatch.
If you look closely, you'll see that a horizontal shaft does goes into the side of the hole.
In rememberance of the Swan Hatch, we remember all of its execute button pushers: Kelvin, Desmond, Locke, Hurley, Ana-Lucia, Ben (The Man Formally Known As Henry Gale), Sawyer and Mr. Eko.
  • The things we learn about Desmond:
Desmond appears to have not only to have lost his clothes but also his copy of the book "Mutual Friend" by Charles Dickens.
He believes that the fail safe key must have detonated the Island magnetic anomaly and imploded the Swan Hatch.
Desmond knew that Locke would make a speech and he also knew the content of that speech.
  • When Charlie says, “I’ve heard trees are great conversationalists.” This may be a veiled reference to his role in “The Lord of the Rings”, where his character, Merry, talks to the living trees known as Ents.
  • The song playing in the truck when Locke picks up Eddie is Muddy Waters "I Feel Like Going Home".
  • Hurley asks Desmond if he’s going to turn into the Incredible Hulk since Desmond was involved in the implosion of the Swan Hatch and all the effects it may caused.
[From the HulkLibrary.com]: "Caught in the heart of a nuclear explosion, victim of gamma radiation gone wild, Dr. Robert Bruce Banner now finds himself transformed in times of stress into the dark personification of his repressed rage and fury- the most powerful man-like creature to ever walk the Earth: The Incredible Hulk!"
  • We were introduced to two new cast members, Paulo and Nikki. Paulo and Nikki's entrance scene was cut from the episode. It was meant to be Claire finding them having sex in Jack's tent, but for some unknown reason, it was cut from the episode.
  • Info on actor Chris Mulkey (Mike):
Mulkey has released a CD of original music. "It Is About The Heart" is a mixture of Texas alternative blues and rock. Ten of this CD's tracks have been used in episodes of Any Day Now.
He is married to actress Karen Landry.
He has two daughters, Amelia and Elizabeth.

  • Info on actor Justin Chatwin (Eddie):
Chatwin says that he treats life like a playground.
Chatwin's character (Billy) in the movie Chumscrubber went through the same experiences as him.
Chatwin is considered the young Tom Cruise [I guess that comes from his role as Tom Cruise's son in the movie The War Of The Worlds]
    Chatwin likes to camp.
Notable appearances include the movie The War Of The Worlds, Weeds, Taking Lives, Just Cause, Taken, Beyond Belief Fact Or Fiction and Smallville.
  • Charlie observes that he is supposed to stand guard outside the Sweat Lodge in case Locke devolves into a monkey, a reference to the movie "Altered States".
  • Synopsis of the film "Altered States" (mentioned by Charlie):
William Hurt plays a Harvard scientist named Jessup who also uses sensory deprivation flotation tanks and takes a drug made from the sacred hallucinatory mushrooms of a primitive tribe. Jessup immerses himself in his tank for too long and regresses to a simian - that is he physically turns into some kind of ape, attacks the campus security guards, is chased by a pack of wild dogs into the local zoo, and kills and eats a sheep before turning back into Professor Jessup.
  • The phrase "Clean up your own mess" is repeated 8 times.
  • Sun is now on a list of Oceanic Airlines flight 815 survivors who have killed an Other. The list includes Ana-Lucia, Mr. Eko, Charlie and Sawyer.

    52. (4.) Every Man For Himself
  • The title "Everyman For Himself" comes from a comment Sawyer makes to Kate when she gets out of her cage but won't leave without Sawyer.
  • While Sawyer makes the statement, “Every man for himself”, no one is actually doing that. In each of theses cases the islanders committed acts of selflessness:
Desmond builds a lightning rod to protect Claire and Aaron from a lightening strike.
Sawyer overtly protects Kate when he decides not to tell her about what was done to him in the Hydra Station.
Jack and Juliet come together to try and save Colleen.
Sawyer gives up his “commission” to his young newly discovered daughter.
Kate climbs back into her cage after she gets out because she will not leave Sawyer and Jack.
  • It looks like someone gave Desmond a better fitting shirt and pants [I guess people got tired of looking at Desmond's pretty legs while wearing Hurley's shirt].
  • Desmond's ability to see (and seemingly change) the future may be critical in changing the variables of the Valenzetti Equation later on. The Valenzetti Equation is doomsday code that foretells the exact date the world will end. The Valenzetti Equation was being used by the Hanso Foundation during the "Lost Experience" game.
  • The survivors have erected a kitchen tent since the implosion of the Swan Hatch.
  • The "Others" tricks:
The "Others" make Sawyer believe that they have installed a pacemaker in him (Ben telling him he can die if he gets above a certain heart rate to get him to corporate).
The "Others" reacted quickly and in shock bringing Colleen's stretcher by Sawyer and Kate's cages (It will give Sawyer and Kate false hope the survivors are coming after them).
The "Others" put Sawyer back in his cage after Kate realizes she can get out of the cage at the top (The "Others" realize Kate cares for Sawyer and would not leave without him and Sawyer is scared to exert his heart rate to escape).
The "Others" try to get Jack's compassion when he is summoned to help Juliet with Colleen (Jack was smart enough to realize it was a trick- Colleen was probably beyond help before she reached the table and the x-ray displayed was of a 40 year old male with a spinal tumor).
The "Others" got some of their medical training from the movies.
The "Others" let Jack hear Sawyer during his "operation" (The "Others" hope Jack will get concerned enough to want to help).
The "Others" run a hooded Jack by Sawyer and Kate's cage (so Sawyer and Kate know he is alive and will stop asking about him).
  • [It is finally confirmed] The "Others" compound is on another island.
  • Info on Alcatraz (mentioned by Ben):
It is located in the middle of San Francisco Bay in San Francisco, California.
It was formerly used as a military stockade from 1850-1933 and later as a maximum security prison.
Today, the island is a historic site.
During its 29 years of operation, the penitentiary never had any official successful escapes [You can't say that about Stalag 13 on "Hogan's Heroes"].
The prison closed because it was far more expensive to operate than other prisons of the time. It was easier to build a new, traditional land-bound prison than to pay for all the upkeep and support the Alcatraz prison required.
  • What we learned about the "Others":
They are unaware that the hatch has imploded and refer to it as "the day the sky went purple.
The electromagnetic anomaly, which turned the sky purple, took out the "Others" communication equipment.
    The "Others" have a sub.
    Juliet is not a surgeon.
    Juliet is a fertility doctor.
Juliet tells Jack that she doesn’t work for Ben, Ben is not the person in charge and a committee makes the decisions.
Apparently Jack was captured by the "Others" to remove a spinal tumor from one of them.
Colleen got a retro aortic valve leak from the gunshot wound.
    Colleen was nicknamed "Col".
    Danny and Colleen were married.
Danny Pickett takes it hard that Colleen is dead and takes out his aggression on Sawyer.
Some more names of the "Others" include Jason and Matthew.
    Ben hates needles.
The "Others" got some of their medical training from the movies.
The "Others" don't have any surgeons.
The "Others" are having electronic communication problems.
  • What we learn about Sawyer:
He did 9 months in prison after Cassidy Phillips pressed charges for conning her (from Season 2 Episode 13 The Long Con episode).
Sawyer's job in prison is "trash pickup".
Sawyer complains the he hasn't done "Tote bag duty" in the 9 months he has been in prison.
Cassidy Phillips claims that Sawyer fathered her daughter Clementine.
Sawyer leaves the money he made during the prison con to Clementine Phillips.
While Sawyer is in prison, he and the warden scan money out of the inmates doing boxing matches.
Sawyer read "Of Mice And Men" while in prison
Sawyer's weight is roughly 180 pounds
Sawyer's claims his age is 35
Sawyer's resting heart rate is 70 and his active heart rate is 140
  • Info on the Merrie Melodies cartoon from Looney Tunes Jack is watching:
It is titled "“A Corny Concerto".
It is a two part cartoon featuring the titles “Tales From the Vienna Woods” and “The Blue Danube” (Jack is watching “The Blue Danube”).
The cartoon was directed by Bob Clampett and written by Frank Tashlin.
It features music that was composed by Johann Strauss.
It was intended as a parody of Disney's "Fantasia".
The cartoon is narrated by Elmer Fudd.
this cartoon tells the tale of The Ugly Duckling.
  • Synopsis of the portion of "A Corny Concerto" called "The Blue Danube":
A mother swan is leading her children along a river, when a small black duck (Daffy Duck, according to later historians) tries to tag along with them. The mother duck shoos the duck away. When the black duck tries again, with his underwater bubble tactic, the mother duck gets angry at the duck that's the cause of the bubble mess (himself encased in a bubble), and sends him back to the water. A large vulture hangs in the distance, spotting the troupe. At one time he sprinkles salt and pepper on one of the ducklings, but too much pepper causes the duckling to sneeze. Then, one by one, the vulture picks off the baby swans, and at one point he picks up the black duck, but returns him, labeling the duck with a "4F" (unfit for military service). The mother swan sees the ducklings missing and goes into a panic, not knowing where her children are (at one point, picking up the black duck as if he was an inanimate object). The black duck sees the vulture, and immediately becomes angry. Flying off (for a few moments resembling a P-40 Warhawk fighter), the duck chases after the vulture, who turns yellow and drops the baby swans, who each have a parachute which lets them drop safely. The duck chases after the vulture, who gets knocked out. He then hands the vulture a drum of TNT and drops him from the sky, causing the vulture to die and play a harp in heaven. The cartoon ends with the black duck finally being allowed to tag along with the swan and her children- with only the duck's shadow having a hard time keeping up with the rest of them.

  • Info on actor Ian Gomez (Munson):
He is married to actress and writer Nia Vardalos
He is of Puerto Rican, Jewish and Greek descent
He is probably best known from his roles as the gay Javier Quintata on Felicity and Larry Almada on The Drew Carey Show.
Notable TV acting appearances include The George Lopez Show, Jake In Progress, Felicity, the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", The Drew Carey Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, NYPD Blue, The Norm Show, Murphy Brown and Melrose Place.
  • The story "Of Mice And Men" by John Steinbeck (mentioned by Sawyer and Ben) surrounds 2 people, Lenny and George, efforts to get and retain work on ranch near Soleda. They have difficulties with being outsiders. Their intrinsic inability to be free is sheer tragedy as they both fail again and again to make the right decision. It's a lonely story about two men who hope more than they can think, who are destined by their misery never to enjoy true companionship and happiness.
The rabbit, in the context of the episode, is significant because on the farm George and Lenny dream that George is promised he'll be allowed to tend the rabbits.
  • Jack is starting to manipulate Juliet when he begins to question whether she makes decisions with Ben or Ben makes all the decisions.
  • Sawyer successfully got another fish biscuit, food pellets and water [but he hasn't figured out how Ben knows what he is up to].
  • It turns out that Paulo has been an Oceanic Airlines flight 815 survivor on the Island all along he's just been off golfing.
  • We learn that Desmond is still clairvoyant- he knew lightening from a sudden thunderstorm would wreck Claire's shelter's roof and Hurley will get soaked from the rain after he leaves the kitchen tent.
  • The Numbers spotted:
The white rabbit has the number 8 painted on its back.
Ben tells Sawyer the heart monitor watch will alert him when is 15 beats away from the maximum number.
Munson and another inmate fight in front of cell block number 15.
Sawyer tells the warden that the cash is in unit 23-C.
Munson's prison number ID ("248") has a 4 and an 8 in it.
Munson's hidden money was in storage facility off 441.
Sawyer's prison number ID ("840") has a 4 and an 8 in it.
Jack states that a patient's x-ray shows a tumor on the L-4 vertebrae.
  • Sawyer refers to Munson as “Mergatroid”, a line uttered by Snagglepuss (the pink anthropomorphic mountain lion).
  • A "crash cart" (mentioned by Jack) is often believed to be a defibrillator used to start the heart, but rather, it stabilizes its rhythm.
  • Juliet brings Jack pancakes, syrup and soda [what, no orange juice].
  • We learn that Charlie is quite handy building roofs.
  • The conversations that Jack hears through the intercom:
    Conversation 1:
Sawyer: "Wait! Wait! What are you doing!? No!"
    Conversation 2:
    [scratchy and intermittent]
    Intercom voice 1: "...under control"
Intercom voice 2: "Yeah? You know what he's doing with the girl?"
Intercom Voice 1: "He knows what he's doing"
Intercom Voice 2: "It was a mistake bringing those 2 here"
  • When Sawyer begins to regain consciousness on the examination table in the Hydra Station, he hears Tom tell Ben, “It has been two days since the sky turned purple. We’re blind. The “comms” are down and we can’t get them back up and Colleen is in critical condition.” [Could there be dissention in the ranks?]
  • The number 8 white rabbit is probably another Stephen King reference. In his non-fiction book “On Writing” King describes a caged white rabbit with the number 8 painted on it as an illustration of the significance of the written word to communicate images and ideas.
  • The sternum (mentioned by the Other Jason) is a long, flat bone located in the center of the thorax.
  • According to Ben, a pacemaker is used in the heart of people who've had bypass work and who's hearts needs just a little jump.
  • Originally, a Kahuna (mentioned by Sawyer about Ben) was the Hawaiian title for a priest, expert, teacher and/or adviser, and the term is still used in that context by native Hawaiians.
  • The only two survivors left on the Island who are parents are Claire and Sawyer (if you don't count Michael and would be parents Sun and Jin).

    53. (5.) The Cost Of Living
  • Hurley notices that since Jack has been absent from the survivor's camp, there are few arguments about Locke's leadership.
  • We learn that Juliet does not like funerals.
  • The things we learn about Eko:
Eko has been unresponsive for about two days.
Eko says that he doesn't need to confess to God his sins because since childhood he has done what he did to survive.
An unconscious and delirious Eko sees visions of Yemi, the militia and an altar boy.
Eko (posing as Yemi) was taken back to Yemi's village by the government soldiers from the airport.
Eko told Amina that Yemi is gone. He was called away quite suddenly. An emergency at the refugee camp down south.
Eko has a deep anger and violent streak that has resulted in murder all his life- even as a child.
Eko's rage can scare even the militia.
Eko finds out that the Red Cross sometimes drops a vaccine shipment to Yemi's village. Unfortunately, the frightened villagers give away 80% of this shipment to the militia that is “protecting” them, and the militia can sell it for big bucks on the black market.
Eko tries to trade the vaccines himself to get more money from the sale for the people of Yemi's village.
The militia finds out about Eko’s plans to sell the vaccine and keep it from them.
Eko was building the church on the island because Anima, the woman from Yemi's village clinic, tells Eko that he owes Yemi one church after it has been rendered unholy due to Eko's murdering the militia men inside of it.
Eko discovers in Yemi's bible a black and white picture of him and Yemi as kids.
Eko learns that Yemi was going to London to continue his studies. Locke gives back to Eko Yemi's cross.
The "Monster" reappears for Eko, he is afraid of it and it pursues him until it kills him.
Locke is the first person to get to Eko after the "Monster" leaves.
Eko tells Locke when he was in the woods, he saw a beautiful white light.
Eko repeats the words from the Psalm 23, as he lies dying in the jungle.
  • The things we learn about the "Others":
Ben isn’t the leader of the Others.
Ben was born on the island, but different Others came to the island.
Still further evidence that Ben has some connection to the outside world because he knew what Jack’s wife looked like.
They had plan to assimilate Jack into their group so he’d feel like one of them.
There's dissention in the ranks- Juliet shows Jack a hidden video message.
  • A description of Colleen's funeral:
Colleen's funeral involved setting her body in a funeral pyre of strew and palm leaves into the ocean.
The funeral is reminiscent of the Viking tradition of burning the dead at sea.
Funeral attire for Colleen's funeral was white. In some cultures, white is a symbol of mourning.
Brenda Lee's "I Wonder" is played over the loudspeaker the pyre is released into the ocean.
A still distraught Danny Pickett is seen.
  • The things we learn about Jack:
    Jack attended Colleen's funeral.
    Jack doesn't like mysteries.

Jack knew the tumor he saw was an aggressive tumor.
Jack viewed a recently developed x-ray.
Since he is cooperating, Jack is getting better meals- a cheeseburger.
  • The things we learn about Ben and his spinal tumor:
Ben first denies to Jack that he has a spinal tumor.
The x-rays were of Ben's neck.
Ben believes in God rather than fate.
Ben does not want to talk to Jack about the tumor in front of any of the Eko's last words were chilling, "We're Next". (especially Juliet). He cites patient doctor confidentially.
  • Juliet gives Jack a cheeseburger to eat and tells Jack that she killed the cow, processed the meat, baked the bun and rendered animal fat for the fries.
  • Eko, Locke, Desmond, Nikki, Paulo and Sayid go to the Pearl Hatch.
Sayid finds the Pearl Hatch's wiring is a closed system.
Desmond knew that people can communicate with other Dharma Initiative stations.
Nikki figures out the monitors are of the other 5 stations and made the suggesting of tapping into one of them.
Paulo finds the Pearl Hatch bathroom works.
Locke, Desmond, Nikki, Paulo and Sayid observe on one of the monitors a strange man with a patch over his right eye then he covers his camera with something.
Eko confesses to the vision of Yemi (the "Monster") when Eko, Locke, Desmond, Nikki, Paulo and Sayid are inside the Pearl Hatch.
  • When a monitor in the Pearl Hatch is hooked up by Sayid:
A picture of a big chair (like the ones in the Pearl Hatch) with a monitor.
The chair is placed before a huge wall of electronic computer or television monitoring equipment (like a master control room) and has a reel to reel tape recording machine.
A man with a eye patch over his right eye comes into the monitor screen in a head shot from the right of the screen.
The man appears to be wearing a white shirt and a Dharma Initiative work suit (like the one Desmond wore in the Swan Hatch) The man appears to be in his 50's and has a slender build.
  • Synopsis of the book "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee: Set in the small Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Depression, "To Kill A Mockingbird" follows three years in the life of 8 year old Scout, her brother Jem, and their father, Atticus- three years punctuated by the arrest and eventual trial of a young black man accused of raping a white woman. The story shows how 3 young outsiders who are taught by their father to practice sympathy and understanding and that experience with hatred and intolerance should not discourage their faith in human goodness.
  • According to Nikki, Paulo is always wining about not being included.
  • Bernard must be one lucky person- he is now the only one left from the plane's tail section (although technically he was seated in the plane's middle section).
  • When Locke and Eko remove the rocks from the entrance to the Nigerian plane is similar to an act from the Bible. When the rock was removed from Jesus’ tomb his body was also not found in the tomb.
  • Eko found the picture of himself and Yemi in Yemi's bible at the Book of Isaiah chapter 5. The first 4 books set up what God wanted Israel to become (Eko's original plans of becoming a priest) and what Israel became (Eko as a warlord). Chapter 5 is the Song of the Vineyard that illustrates the consequences of the rift. This was a prophecy as Israel was later invaded and destroyed by the Assyrians (or a prophecy that Eko would be destroyed by his sins). Then comes the 6 Woes (or blights): Greed, Pleasure Seeking, Deliberate Sinning (because they believed they would not be punished - Eko believing his killing was justified), Perversity (calling good bad and bad good - killing bad people and believing it was necessary for the good of), Conceit (knowing better than God) and Corrupt Values.
  • The "Monster" makes its return and can take human form.
  • Juliet's video looks like the videoes for Bob Dylan's song "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and INXS's “Mediate” (an extended version of “What You Need”).

He graduated magna cum laude with a BFA from the prestigious SUNY Purchase Acting Conservatory. Other notable alumni include Edie Falco, Stanley Tucci, Parker Posey and Wesley Snipes.
He had previous roles on Gilmore Girls and The Unit.
  • The signs Juliet shows on her tape to Jack:
    "Ignore everything I'm saying
    Ben is a liar
    And he is very dangerous
Some of us want a change
But it has to look like an accident
It has to look like we tried to save him
And that's up to you, Jack
It's a complicated surgery. No one would ever know
    And I would protect you
Now tell me to turn off the movie" And Eko and Yemi find each other again
  • Many fans were shocked and saddened by the sudden death of the beloved Eko. However, actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr. Eko) wanted a short term contract and it was rumored that he had "become an increasingly difficult presence on set, refusing to film scenes as scripted, insisting on rewrites and even "demanding" several times to be released from his contract".
  • Eko's last words were chilling, "You're Next".

    54. (6.) I Do

    Kate considers hauling rocks "big".
The fugitive Kate doesn't do taco night.
Kate called the Marshal and asked him to stop chasing her. He said that he would as long as she lived a normal life, but they both knew that she couldn’t do that.

Marital bliss was short lived when she almost got pregnant.
After finding out how close she got to being pregnant, Kate left her husband. She told him some things about her past then gave him a drug laced drink so he couldn't arrest her when she left.

Ben gave Jack some trust after Jack continues to refuse to operate on him. Ben left the door to the cage unlocked, Jack found a gun locker and found Ben's TV monitor room.
Jack suddenly takes control of his situation with the Others during Ben's surgery. Jack makes an unnecessary incision in Ben that will make him bleed to death, but Jack will fix it when he knows Kate and Sawyer are released.
Jack hears over the intercom a girl’s voice saying "try the door".
  • To refresh your memory, the story Jack told Kate while she was stiching him up in "The Pilot" was about his first solo surgery:
"Well, fear's sort of an odd thing. When I was in residency my first solo procedure was a spinal surgery on a 16 year old kid, a girl. And at the end, after 13 hours, I was closing her up and I, I accidentally ripped her dural sac, shredded the base of the spine where all the nerves come together, membrane as thin as tissue. And so it ripped open and the nerves just spilled out of her like angel hair pasta, spinal fluid flowing out of her and I... and the terror was just so crazy. So real. And I knew I had to deal with it. So I just made a choice. I'd let the fear in, let it take over, let it do its thing, but only for 5 seconds, that's all I was going to give it. So I started to count, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Then it was gone. I went back to work, sewed her up and she was fine."
  • Sawyer has now gotten lucky twice on the island.
  • The name Jacob from the Bible (the name of a person mentioned by the Others):
Jacob was the third Biblical patriarch.
His father is Isaac and his grandfather is Abraham.
Jacob plays a major part in some of the later events in the Book of Genesis.
Also noted about Jacob is "Jacob's Ladder". The term refers to the biblical story in which Jacob was given a vision of a ladder leading to Heaven with angels ascending and descending during a fight with his brother Esau.
Jacob robbed his brother Esau out of his birthright.
Jacob wrestled with an angel and won.
Jacob had 12 boys who would form the 12 tribes of Israel.
One of Jacob’s sons (and his favorite) was Benjamin, the youngest of Jacob's twelve sons and full blood brother to Joseph.
The Tribe of Benjamin and the Tribe of Judah split from the rest of the tribes. They formed their own country in the southern part of the Promised Land. Eventually, the other 10 tribes were conquered.

  • Info on the Webley-Fosbery Revolver (found by Jack in the Hydra Station gun armory):
The Webley-Fosbery Revolver was an unusual, recoil-operated, automatic revolver designed by Lieutenant Colonel George Vincent Fosbery.
It was produced by the Webley and Scott company from 1901 to 1915.
The Webley-Fosbery Revolver is easily recognizable by the zig-zag grooves on the cylinder.
The Webley-Fosbery Revolver quickly proved popular among target shooters because the trigger mechanism did not rotate the cylinder and shots were smooth & consistent permitting rapid and accurate shooting.
The Webley-Fosbery Revolver was never adopted as an official British government sidearm, although many were privately purchased by British officers prior to and during World War I.
Production of the Webley-Fosbery Revolver ceased between 1915 and 1918, with a total production of less than 5000.
  • Info on The Feast of the Ascension (mentioned by Marshal Mars):
The Christian doctrine of the Ascension holds that Jesus body ascended to heaven in the presence of His disciples, following his resurrection.
Jesus and the remaining eleven Disciples are seated at a table, presumably in a room in or near Jerusalem. Jesus commands his followers to spread the Gospel and that those who believe will be known by their invulnerability to poison, ability to heal the sick, exorcise demons, and the like. After delivering these final words, Jesus is received into Heaven to sit at the right hand of God. No description of the Ascension itself is given.

A set of hemostats comes in several different sizes and types. For example, Kelly, Crile and Halstead
Any given surgery may require the use of a number of hemostats
A hemostat is also called a hemostatic clamp
A hemostat is commonly used in both surgery and emergency medicine to control bleeding, especially from a torn blood vessel, until the bleeding can be repaired by stitches or other surgical techniques. The process of halting bleeding is called hemostasis

The last number Ben says before drifting off for surgery was 8.
Suzanne tells Kate she had 4 boys.
  • The thing we must remember after seeing this episode: Don't introduce Sun (Colleen's killer) to Danny Pickett. You've seen how upset Danny is and he is taking it out on to Sawyer. What would he really do if he came face to face with Sun? I doubt there would be much hestitation and he would not hear the pleas of mercy saying "she's pregnant".

  • "A Brief History Of Time" by Stephen Hawking (the book Aldo was reading) synopsis:
It attempts to explain a range of subjects in cosmology, including the Big Bang, black holes, light cones and superstring theory, to the nonspecialist reader.
Its main goal is to give an overview of the subject but, unusually for a popular science book, it also attempts to explain some complex mathematics.
Hawling notes that an editor warned him that for every equation in the book the readership will be halved, hence it includes only a single equation: E=mc2.
In addition to Hawking's abstinence from equations, the book also simplifies matters by means of illustrations throughout the text, depicting complex models and diagrams.

    57. (9.) Stranger In A Strange Land
  • The title of the episode comes from the science fiction book Stranger In A Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein.
    Synopsis:
The story portrays Valentine Michael Smith's adaptation to, and understanding of, humans and their culture, which is portrayed as an amplified version of consumerist and media-driven 20th-century America. Smith is the son of two astronauts, raised by Martians on Mars until he is taken "home" to Earth, where he is effectively imprisoned in a hospital by the government, which wishes him to transfer any rights he may have to ownership of Mars to the itself, a world government whose Secretary-General happens to be American. Smith is also something of a political pawn in factional struggles within the Federation and to make matters worse he is heir to the fortunes of the entire exploration party, not just his parents. In short, he is a man besieged on all sides by those who wish to use him to further their own ends. Nurse Gillian Boardman works at the hospital where Smith is kept. Upon arrival on Earth, Smith is physically weak and oppressed by the heavy atmosphere, and has never seen a female human because the entire crew that retrieves him from Mars is male. Nelson, the ship's doctor, has ordered that Smith be attended by male staff only, including nurses, but this is simply a challenge to Gillian. Egged on by her sometime boyfriend, the investigative journalist Ben Caxton, she slips past the guards to get a peek at Smith, and in doing so inadvertently becomes his first female "water brother" by sharing a glass of water with him. To him this is a holy relationship based on the customs of arid Mars. Later, when she and Ben watch a "stereovision" telecast of the "Man from Mars", she knows instantly that it is a fraud. Emboldened by her revelation, Ben attempts to see and unmask the phony Smith, but disappears. Meanwhile, Gillian tries to persuade Smith to leave the hospital with her. He is willing to go anywhere with a water brother, but they only get as far as Ben's apartment before agents attempt to kidnap them. Smith causes the agents to disappear, and is so shocked by Gillian's terrified reaction that he enters what seems to be a catatonic state. They reach the enclave owned by Ben's friend and fellow gadfly, Jubal Harshaw, an eccentric millionaire writer of fiction, TV scripts and other kinds of mass-market pablum, who also happens to be a qualified medical doctor, a lawyer, and an advisor to certain public figures. Harshaw's five employees include three beautiful women who act as secretaries, walking dictation machines and cooks, as well as restraints on his excesses, along with technical helpers Duke and Larry. With Gillian, they teach Smith human customs and behavior (including sex), which he initially does not understand. Smith demonstrates psychic abilities and superhuman intelligence, which are coupled with a childlike naïveté. When Jubal is trying to explain religion to him, Smith understands the concept of God only as "one who groks", which includes every living person, plant, and animal. This leads him to coin the phrase "Thou art God" and apply it to every human he meets. Due to his education on a different planet, many human concepts, such as war, clothing, and jealousy are strange to him, while the idea of an afterlife is something he takes as a given because the government on Mars is composed of "Old Ones", the spirits of Martians who have died. It is also customary for loved ones and friends to eat the bodies of the dead, in a spirit of Holy Communion. Harshaw realizes he cannot keep the young man concealed forever, and after an attempt by government forces to reclaim Smith is frustrated by the young man's Martian-taught abilities, Harshaw brokers a deal under which the Secretary-General, in his individual capacity, will act as trustee for Smith's immense wealth. Harshaw is able to make his implication stick that human law, which would have granted ownership of Mars to Smith, has no applicability to a planet already inhabited by intelligent aliens. Once accustomed to the human race, Smith moves out with Gillian and joins a traveling circus as a magician, but although his "magic" is real, he is a failure as an entertainer because of his inability to understand people. He eventually learns to understand people when he realizes that most humor is based on laughing at distress or indignities suffered by others.

  • ”Shambala” by Three Dog Night plays on the car radio and in the VW van.
The song is about the mythical kingdom of Shambala, said to be hidden somewhere within or beyond the peaks of the Himalayas and mentioned in various ancient texts including the Kalachakra Tantra and ancient texts of Tibetan Buddhism. Shambala is also a theme in Sufism (a diverse range of beliefs and practices dedicated to God, divine love and sometimes to help a fellow man) and it is through this tradition that the notion of Shambala became the song’s subject. Songwriter Daniel Moore became a Sufi in 1970. The lyrics refer to a situation where kindness and cooperation are universal, joy and good fortune abound, and psychological burdens are lifted.
The lyrics seem quite appropriate for Hurley:
Wash away my troubles, wash away my pain
    With the rain in Shambala
Wash away my sorrow, wash away my shame
    With the rain in Shambala
Everyone is helpful, everyone is kind
    On the road to Shambala
Everyone is lucky, everyone is so kind
    On the road to Shambala
How does your light shine, in the halls of Shambala?

The aim of the game is to win by trapping your opponent's king (called checkmate). White is always first to move and players take turns alternately moving one piece at a time. Each type of piece has its own method of movement. A piece may be moved to another position or may capture an opponent's piece. This is done by landing on the appropriate square with the moving piece and removing the defending piece from play. With the exception of the knight, a piece may not move over or through any of the other pieces.

The largest doll was that of Fukurokuju, a happy bald god with an unusually tall chin. It nested the six remaining deities. Inspired, Maliutin drew a sketch of a Russian version of the toy. It was carved by Vasiliy Zvezdochkin in a toy workshop in Sergiyev Posad and painted by Sergei Maliutin.
In 1900, M.A. Mamontova, the wife of Savva Mamontov, presented the dolls at the World Exhibition in Paris and the toy earned a bronze medal. Soon, many other places in Russia started making matryoshki of various styles.
