A plane crash on an island between Fiji and Hawaii has 48 survivors and they discover very strange things on this island. A man (Locke) after the horrific plane crash runs to help those he can and rallies the other survivors to help him. One of the strangers asks his name: Jack. After the initial shock of the crash had settled, Jack goes into the jungle to check on his own injuries where he meets a young woman (Kate). He enlists her help in stitching a laceration on his back and explains that he is a doctor. An older black woman (Rose), who sat near Jack on the plane, is missing her husband Bernard from the plane's tail section. She believes that he is still alive. Back at the crash site, people do what they can to make everyone comfortable. A brother and sister (Boone and Shannon) are constantly arguing. A Korean couple (Jin and Sun) stays by themselves. A large young man (Hurley) helps where he can by sorting through luggage and always calls people “Dude”. A man (Charlie) with a glazed look on his face seems to be wondering around the wreckage looking for something specific. A man of Iraqi decent (Sayid) has technology expertise. Another man (Sawyer) seems to be collecting items useful to survival and keeping them for himself. A very pregnant woman (Claire) is traveling alone on the flight. A black father and son (Michael and Walt) don’t seem to be getting along very well. The next day after the crash, Jack, Charlie and Kate tell the survivors that they are going to look for the plane’s cockpit in the jungle. They find it but a mysterious "Monster" attacks then kills the barely alive co-pilot. The three run for their lives.

He believes that he caused the crash. Sawyer, Michael, Walt and Jin leave on the raft only to be found by four men who abduct Walt, shoot at Michael, Jin & Sawyer and set the raft on fire. Locke finally opens the hatch.
