Why is he on the island? He has learn to have faith in things he has no control over and learn to accept that he can't fix everything.
 Why was he in Australia? He came to Australia to claim his father’s body and to bring it back to be buried. His chief of surgery father Christian lost his medical license when he operated drunk and felt inadequate next to his son’s surgical skills. In Sydney, Australia, Christian had a fatal heart attack.
What does he bring to the island? He is the only known medical doctor to survive the crash and a natural leader thanks to his observations of his physician father’s way of treating patients.

Kate Ryan (Evangeline Lily)- manipulating, independent woman and fugitive arrested in Sydney, Australia by a US marshal
Nicknames The wanderlust, Freckles, The fugitive and Kate "tagalong" Ryan
Why is she on the island? She has to learn to accept her mistake of killing her drunk abusive step-father who turned out to be her real father.
Why was she in Australia? She is a murder suspect and bank robber who is trying to flee the law and US marshal Edward Mars. She was staying at an Australian farm until she learned the farmer was planning on turning her into the authorities for the reward money.
What does she bring to the island? She is resourceful, an experienced tracker and delivered Claire’s baby.

Charlie Pace (Dominic Monohan)-
NicknamesThe Herion addicted has been rock God, Charlie "junkie" Pace and The annoying little Australian guy
Why is he on the island? He has kick his drug habit and learn to embrace music again.
Why was he in Australia? He is a member of punk rock band Drive Shaft who comes to his brother’s and fellow band member Liam’s home in Australia to deliver news that he's lined up a gig for Drive Shaft as an opening act in L.A. Liam is settled and likes his new drug and punk rock free life. Ian offers to get Charlie some help for his drug abuse and invites him to stay but Charlie leaves.
 What does he bring to the island? He rescued Jack from a cave in and feels a strong attachment to Claire.

Hugo "Hurley" Reyes (Jorge Garcia)- an overweight fast food chicken restaurant employee with a trouble life of being once in a mental hospital
Nicknames The big fat loveable curse guy, Hurley "girl shy" Reyes, No change Reyes, Bad luck Reyes, The likeable sad sack who won the lottery and The dude callin' guy
Why is he on the island? He has to learn that luck is something you make and learn to accept change.
 Why was he in Australia? He won the lottery from numbers that Leonard, a mental patient, had given him. Winning the lottery just brings bad luck. Leonard tells Hurley that he heard the numbers from someone named Sam Toomey when they were working one year in Kalgoorlie, Australia. Hurley believes the numbers are cursed and he has caused the plane crash.
What does he bring to the island? His sense of humor makes island life a little easier

John Locke (Terry O’Quinn)- a regional collection supervisor for a box company, a former supermarket assistant manager, has a natural survivor ability, good at being resourceful and has a fascination with war games

Why is he on the island? He has to learn to have faith in himself and show people his faith in things.
Why was he in Australia? At first he said he was in Australia “looking for something”. However, he is actually in Australia to take part in an authentic aboriginal walkabout (the ancient aboriginal rite of survival in the wilderness) but denied the chance. The walkabout company feared there would be problems because he showed up in a wheelchair.
What does he bring to the island? He is a skillful hunter, seems in tune with the island’s mysterious forces and has almost an obsessive need to find out about the strange things on the island.

Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder)- a former lifeguard, Shannon's step-brother and an executive in his mother’s lucrative wedding planning business. (Season 1)
Nicknames Locke junior and Boone "pretty boy" Carlyle
Why is he on the island? He has to learn to get over the strong lust that he has for Shannon.
 Why was he in Australia?He came to Sydney, Australia after thinking that his step-sister Shannon is in trouble from a disturbing phone call for help in an attempt to get money from Boone's mother. Shannon knew that he would come to help because of Boone’s strong feelings for her.
What does he bring to the island? He was key in searching for Claire when she disappeared with the mysterious Ethan, found the hatch in the ground and key to Locke's belief in the island.

Shannon Rutherford (Maggie Grace)- spoiled, asthmatic, an aspiring ballet dancer, teachers little girls ballet, Boone's step-sister and very good at manipulating men into doing what she wants (Seasons 1 and 2)
Nicknames The male manipulator, Shannon "useless" Rutherford, The princess and The blonde bitchy spoiled brat
Why is she on the island? She has to learn to accept the fact that not everyone has faith in her abilities.
 Why was she in Australia? She orchestrated the disturbing phone call for help in an attempt to get money from Boone's mother. Shannon’s boyfriend Brian took all the money and ran off leaving Shannon with no place to go. With no other choice, she leaves Australia with Boone.
What does he bring to the island? She uses her knowledge of French to help Sayid translate the maps and the radio transmission made by Danielle Rousseau, hears “whispers” from the jungle indicating there might be other people on the island and has a number of invaluable skills due to her number of old boyfriends.

Jin-Soo Kwan (Daniel Dae Kim)- a humble childhood as a fisherman’s son, a former doorman at the Seoul Gateway Hotel, a low wage waiter who became a tight knit “special assistant” to his wife’s wealthy father and can only speak Korean

Why is he on the island? He and Sun can fix their broken relationship.
 Why was he in Australia? He was delivering expensive watches to Mr. Paik's associates in Sydney, Australia and the US. His job had made him into a person he doesn’t like and strained his marriage.
What does he bring to the island? He is a superb fisherman and helps Michael build a raft.

Sun Paik Kwan (Yoon-Jin Kim)- a housewife, a natural horticulturist, daughter of a wealthy Korean businessman, Jin’s wife, a graduate of Seoul National University and can speak both English and Korean fluently
Nicknames Sun "green thumb" Kwan, The not so obiedient wife and The translator
Why is she on the island? She and Jin can fix their broken relationship.
 Why was she in Australia? With the promise of having the long overdue honeymoon, she came with Jin on his trip to Sydney, Australia and the US delivering expensive watches to Mr. Pail’s associates. With some assistance, she had planned to leave Jin at the Sydney, Australia airport. Jin’s mysterious and violent behavior from his job working for her father was straining their marriage. At the last minute, she had a change of heart.
What does she bring to the island? She has invaluable knowledge of plants and herbs to feed people and cure aliments.

Sayid Jaarah (Naveen Andrews)- a former member of Iraq’s Republican Guard trained in delivering torture, a communications officer in Iraq’s Republican Guard and veteran of the Gulf War

Why is he on the island? He has to learn to come to terms with his military past.
 Why was he in Australia? He helped the CIA and ASIS to expose a terrorist cell with one of the members being his former roommate in college. He is rewarded for his efforts with a plane ticket and the location of his true love Nadia.
What does he bring to the island? His confidence and military training make him a natural leader, skilled in electronics which allowed him to pick up radio transmissions, gains the trust of Michelle Rousseau and hears “whispers” from the jungle indicating there might be other people on the island.

Walt Lloyd (Malcolm David Kelly)- a young boy who is good at games of skill and chance. He has this strange power to think of things and make them happen especially to animals and birds and Michael’s son

Why is he on the island? He has to learn to control the strange abilities he has upon things and to bond with his father.
 Why was he in Australia? He lives in Sydney Australia with his mother and stepfather Brian. After Walt’s mother died, she left him into the care of his father Michael. However, Walt does not even know Michael since his mother moved him away from his father when he was a baby and never let Michael have any contact with Walt. His stepfather had adopted him but he felt incapable of raising Walt by himself.
What does he bring to the island? He explores and observers people on the island with his dog Vincent and may or may not have used his strange powers over things in order to make things happen on the island.

Michael Dawson (Harold Perrineau)- a construction worker, artist and Walt’s father

Why is he on the island? He has to learn to be a father.
 Why was he in Australia? He was in Sydney, Australia to pick up his estranged son Walt after Walt’s mother had died and left him into the care of his father who Walt does not know.
What does he bring to the island? His construction skills allow him to properly build a raft.

Claire Littleton (Emile De Ravin)- an unmarried single mother, Aaron's mother and works at a fish fry restaurant
Nicknames The new mamma, Claire "my baby" Littleton and The young mother
Why is she on the island? She has learn to accept raising a child on her own.
 Why was she in Australia? An Australian native, she was going to have her baby in the US and then give it up for adoption there. Her boyfriend/ father of the baby Thomas couldn’t handle the responsibility of raising a child and left her. Claire believed a psychic when he told her that she would raise the baby alone but ultimately recommended a couple to adopt the child in Los Angeles, California. Claire is convinced there was no couple and the psychic knew the plane would go down forcing her to raise the child on the island alone.
What does she bring to the island? Her child may or may not have some connection to the island.

James "Sawyer" Ford (Josh Holloway)- a con man, outcast and trouble maker
Nicknames Sawyer The Avenger, The wise cracking con man and The nickname guru
Why is he on the island? He has to learn to forgive the man who conned his family.
 Why was he in Australia? At first he said that is in Australia on “business”. After James Ford gets information from fellow con man Hibbs about the location in Sydney, Australia of the man (named Saywer) who had made a disastrous deal with his father years earlier. In the aftermath, his father killed his mother then he killed himself. James seeks revenge and takes up Sawyer’s con ways. He shoots the man who he is told is Sawyer, but the dying man last words indicate he was not the real Sawyer. The man was someone who owed Hibbs money and Hibbs had set James up. Very upset, James got into a bar fight unknowing with the Australian Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Agriculture. The Sydney police know who he really is: James Ford from Memphis, Tennessee with a long rap sheet of crimes. The Australian police tell him that Australia has had enough of James Ford and is deported back to the US.
What does he bring to the island? He is a scavenger, schemer and hears “whispers” from the jungle indicating there might be other people on the island.

Ana-Lucia Cortez (Michelle Rodriguduez)- a cop (Season 2)
Nicknames The woman warrior, Rambo, Take charge Cortez and Ana "trigger happy" Cortez
Why is she on the island? She has to come to terms with losing her unborn child in a police shooting, losing the attention of the father of the baby and killing the man who shot her.
 Why was she in Australia? She quit the police force after her mom/ boss found out that Ana-Lucia shot and lied about killing the robbery suspect who wounded her previously. She then unhappily took a job as a airport security guard for Pan Am Airlines. She met Christian Shepard at an airport bar. He convinced her to come with him to Sydney to basically drive him around while he drinks and to run away from her problems. She eventually leaves Christian to return to Los Angeles.
What does she bring to the island? She has toughness and leadership skills necessary to survive on the island and encounters with the "Others".

Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje)- a drug smuggler posing as a priest (Season 2)
Nicknames The big spiritual guy, The former drug lord and Eko The Bible
Why is he on the island? He has to come to terms with his past that lead to his brother's death.
Why was he in Australia? In his fake priesthood, he was at a church in Australia and was going to leave for the US. Then his supervisor sent him to investigate the "miracle" of a young girl living in Sydney who supposably drowned then came back to life the next day. This delayed his travel plans and he took a later flight- Oceanic flight 815.
What does he bring to the island? His quiet spiritual personality helps ease stressful situations and his physical appearance be an intimating force to be reckoned with.

Libby (Cynthia Watros) - a clinical psychologist (Season 2)
Nicknames The shrink lady, Wrong place at the wrong time Libby and Hurley's girl
Why is she on the island? She uses hypnosis on Claire and become the voice of reason for Hurley's irrational behavior.
 Why was she in Australia? She may have been following Hurley since she was also a patient at the Santa Ana Hospital and developed a crush while observing him in the hospital.
What does she bring to the island? She has some medical training and helps Hurley and Claire get over their irrational behavior.

Neil Paulo (Rodrigo Santoro) - a cook and a diamond theif (Season 3)
Nicknames Pretty Boy Paulo and Who's Paulo
Why was he in Australia? He and Nikki were stealing diamonds from the producer of the TV series "Expose".
What does he bring to the island? He has good looks.


Nikki Frenandez (Kiele Sanchez) - an actress and a diamond theif (Season 3)
Nicknames Spider Woman and Who's Nikki
Why was she in Australia? She was filming an episode of the TV series "Expose" and she and Paulo were stealing diamonds from the producer.
 What does she bring to the island? She caught a clue that no one else caught.

Why is she on the island? She is one of "The Others"

Desmond Hume (Henry Ian Cusick) - a Royal Scotts Regiment Lance Corporal (dishonorably discharged) and racing yacht sailor (Season 3)
Nicknames The mate from the Swan hatch, Desmond "the sot" Hume and The brother callin' guy
Why is he on the island? He washed up on shore from a violent storm during the yacht race. He was tricked into staying in the Swan hatch for 3 years.
 What does he bring to the island? He has knowledge of what the Swan hatch's computer can do.

Ben Linus (Michael Emerson)- (Season 3)
Nicknames "Henry Gale", Him, Benry, Chief Other and The Big Kahuna
Why is he on the island? He lived on the island his whole life
 What does he bring to the island? He is in charge of "The Others"
